How about concert photos?

Saw Fink tonight in a tiny room from a short distance.

Their next gig is in Seattle on the 5th.
I could easily get there, but I am totally satisfied with what I heard tonight.

Ravi Coltrane with Brandee Younger - Newmark Theater - March 1.

This was the first time that I have been at a jazz performance with a harp. I have heard it before, but I hadn’t seen it before. The interplay between harp, piano and bass was remarkable.

They were pretty good! If you are a Genesis fan, I highly recommend the show.

Beth Gibbons at the Detroit Masonic Temple two days ago. Good show, though short, only a hour and ten minutes. They played her whole solo album, went off stage after one hour, then came back to play two songs one from Portishead and other I wasn’t familiar with. One other “comment” the “mix” of her vocals had to much reverb and an emphasis on the lower frequencies making it difficult to understand what she was singing. I experience this a lot in “amplified” shows, might be me but I sometimes wonder if the sound guys are deaf …

Beth is the short one in the last photo. The guy to her left played a whole range of unusual instruments. She never introduced the band so no idea who’s who …

How was it?

Rick is cool grumpy dude. He played what he felt like which included:

  • King Arthur suite. Spectacular on the synths. I’m a big King Arthur fan
  • 2 tracks with Bowie (Major Tom included) on the Steinway
  • Eleanor Rigby in the style os Sergei Prokofiev and Help in the style of Sant Saenz
  • The Yes Sonata on the Steinway. Wow

1.5 hours non stop. Fantastic basic and intimate show

Jack White is the same way. No set list, no recognition of latest album. He just plays what he feels like. But, I don’t get the impression he’s grumpy.

[For the gear heads: Dweezil played Frank Zappa’s Roxy & Elsewhere Gibson SG (which has since been modified) and Frank’s Gibson Les Paul Custom that is on the cover of the Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar box.]
