How to update PWD Firmware

@magister0 not that important. I would advise change the PWD firmware first, let the dust settle, then try out bridge updates only if you need to.

@magister0 - the one time I thought it was useful to upgrade the bridge FW was when I started using JRMC - I couldn’t get album art to display and wglenn told me that it works if 2.14b or higher gets installed. I tried it and it worked.

@stereophilus – Thanks, that makes sense.

@David – Good to know. I don’t use JRMC but will file away that piece of knowledge since I may try JRMC at some point.

Hello

I attempted load the firmware 2.4.3 on to DAC MkII but the logo light on the front panel did not start blinking, and new the firmware was not installed. Upon restarting the DAC, the firmware installed is 2.2.0.

Any advise is appreciated – Jim

See. Official firmware update page is published. Thread

Yes thank you, I followed the published instructions— but no luck.

@panek@bu.edu

pm me your tel nbr and should get you up in 5 minutes. much faster than here.

Hey Gordon, think I’m in same boat. I’ve downloaded the 2.4.3 as advertised but haven’t been able to upgrade the firmware from 2.2 to 2.43. I have upgraded my PWD before (to 2.2…) but for whatever reason, seems like the PWD isn’t recognizing the SD card (it is unlocked…) after I turn the back power back on. Is there a way to reboot the entire unit outside of the switch in the back? Thanks!

Start by reading the thread on this link. You will see what I mean by READ.

read all my posts and if no luck … unplug ALL a/c and interconnect wires from pwd and let it sit overnight. Then start over.

Thanks Gordon, will do…

And remember, once the PWD loads the firmware once it won’t do it again unless you go to a different version or change the numbering system as described in the version update page. Also, as Gordon has detailed, it seems fairly common that people aren’t placing the unzipped files on the card. Open the card and look and see what’s there. Then look at the update page to see what it should look like

Here’s what it should look like:

<fieldset class="gc-fieldset">
							<legend> Attached files </legend> <a href="/wp-content/uploads/attachments/63203=2255-74746bdd33f982f9801e879caf4ec2.png"><img src="/wp-content/uploads/attachments/63203=2255-74746bdd33f982f9801e879caf4ec2.png" class="gc-images" title="/FileUpload/e9/74746bdd33f982f9801e879caf4ec2.png" style="max-width:300px" /></a> </fieldset>

I have followed the instructions to a “t” and have not had any success. Initially, the PWD just powered up with the same firmware - no blinking lights or anything. Having tried repeatedly now, the display does not light up at all and the PWD is inoperable. This could not have happened at a worse time. I am evaluating my options for a next gen DAC, and this does not help. FYI, I have a Mk II board with 2.2.0 and CLD 105.

My experience with formatting the SD card is rather unsuccessful.

The way I do it is to erase everything on the SD card and dump the new files (not folder nor zip) onto its root directory.

It works every time, but not on a SD card larger than 2GB.

You need to use a SD card of 1 or 2GB which is almost impossible to get hold of these days so you need to hold on to the one originally supplied with the unit (or MKII upgrade) .

It appears that I am in the same situation as acolcer. To the best of my knowledge I followed the instructions to upgrade the firmware to v 2.4.3 and I see no blinking light, the DAC only initializes and runs firmware v 2.2.0. I repeated the protocol 4 times and no luck.

This just in… I used the “old” 2 GB SD card supplied by PS Audio from the MK II upgrade and the v 2.4.3 loaded in 3-4 minutes.

Apparently the new SD card are not initialized and I don’t know hoe to do that. Does any one know how to initialize an 2 GB SD card?

You may need to format the card to FAT, although typically a new card comes formatted.

Very kind, as always. Did you make contact and have success?

Do you really need to zip them? Might it be easier to say "Place all the following files onto the root directory of the SD card" and give everyone ALL the files?

Just a thought.

--SSW

The only downsides are it is a bigger bother downloading multiple files than a single zip file, and it takes more bandwidth for both sides. Perhaps offer both a single zip file and the individual files, explaining that the zip file contains the other files and is quicker and easier to download.

Given the maturity of PCs and consumers’ familiarity with them, I am surprised zip files present any confusion or challenge. I expect people to be as able to unzip a file as they open a Word file or PDF. But a problem there is.

Of course, be prepared for all sorts of issues with users forgetting to download a file, and mixing files of different firmware versions.
