Hi all, has anyone had any experience connecting up the Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC via I2S with any of PS Audio’s disc players?
I understand the specs for I2S in each is just a little different and I’ve met someone who’s looking at whether they need to get a custom made I2S cable to link up their DirectStream memory player (for its I2S output) to play nice with Mola Mola Tambaqui Dac’s I2S input.
Did a search. The Mola Mola Tambaqui has I2S, but a different pin configuration to PS Audio, and its I2S only does PCM. For DSD in to the Tambaqui you need to use USB or RJ45, which explains why Innuos provide those outputs.
Re previous post, I could play DSD64 by uPnP. Paul uses DSD256. I was not aware Innuos can send them, only DSD128, I wonder how he plays them.
Comparing HDMI cables with good reviews for I2S connection would be expensive. The transactional costs alone would eat me alive. So, I decided to either go with the stock PS Audio HDMI cable for the Airlens or to buy the best one available, which is expensive but only a small percentage of my system cost. AQ Dragon 48.
I found dragon 48 best doing i 2s after spending equivalent as lesser cables. Now I have a 21/2 more expensive USB cable the Dragon does awesome home theater. The value cable is Ral but it doesn’t do video so ilI’d do WWPS7 or Dragon HDMI be ready for a system digital cable chain upgrade. The DS MK2 sounds way better ditching I2S for IUSB. I was a non believer.
Many of us here have researched the heck out of HDMI cables for use as I2S cables. We went through many. Many I say! The least expensive but still quite wonderful is the Revelation Audio Labs HDMI cable priced around $600, depending on length. An audible improvement over cables costing less. But the long term winner has been the Audioquest Dragon 48. It costs at least double what the RAL costs. Some here have tried other brands but giving you two easy answers seems useful.
If you don’t want to spring for the AudioQuest, another very good option is the Tubulus Concentus I2S cable ($700). It’s a little more than the RAL, which I have not heard, but it was definitely a step up from the two less expensive cables I used previously.
I went from AQ Mocha/Coffee to Wireworld Platinum Starlight 8 (sometimes available for $800) and have been very happy with it. It seems detailed, coherent and well balanced top to bottom.
I’d be scared to try a well broken-in Dragon, especially since I would need the 1.5 meter length in my setup…
before the MK2 I used the Wireworld Platinum Starlight 7. After purchasing the MK2 I upgraded to AQ Firebird, saving the Wireworld which now sounds great on the AL …
First post on this forum, so hello all! Been reading quite a bit of conversation on HDMI cables and I’ve appreciated the input. I currently have a few older AQ Vodka HDMIs that I’m looking to improve upon. After reading through quite a few threads here on the PSA forums (and a few others), I believe I’ve narrowed it down to the RAL or the Wireworld Platinum Starlight 48. I unfortunately can not do an AQ Dragon :(. Has anyone had the opportunity to hear both the RAL and the WWPS48? Any impressions on how they directly compare? I’ve read the PS7 comparisons, but I haven’t seen much on how the PS48 compares to the RAL. Thanks you in advance!
Can’t help you there. . I’ve not heard any of these cables, and I use the PS Audio HDMI AC12 everywhere that HDMI exists in my systems, but I wanted to say WELCOME!
I hesitate to post this since its not exactly compliant with your request (but you might find it of value anyway):
I have experience comparing the following HDMI cables in my system –
RAL
AQ Vodka
PinkFaun Interlink
PSA “standard issue” HDMI
To my ears, in my system, the RAL barely eked out a perceived improvement over the AQ Vodka and the PSA cables. The PinkFaun and RAL were a toss up and I could not consistently prefer one over the other across a variety of recordings.
I had some issues with the PinkFaun cable staying seated and cutting out (I purchased it used by the way), so I settled on the RAL, which I liked enough to buy a second one from the used market. The RALs connect my PSA AirLens network bridge and my PSA DirectStream Memory Player to my DirectStream Sr. DAC.
Bottom line/one data point for your consideration: I would seriously consider looking elsewhere (other than the RAL) if you are willing to spend some money to try and best the AQ Vodka. For the money (unless you can get a great deal on a used cable), the RAL just wasn’t significantly enough “better” than the AQ Vodka for me to recommend you set your sights on one for a replacement for your AQ Vodka.
