Is there a bad recording with the BHK and DirectStream suite

If there is I am having the hardest time finding it.

For the longest time I’ve always seen two different schools of thoughts in the pursuit of audio nirvana.

One was about absolute sound retrieval. Reproducing all the nuances and even flaws of the recording.

The other was about the enjoyment of music - forgoing detail but about a romantic presentation of music.

The running in of the BHK combo is progressing well in my system. Having it as part of my home theatre system means the amps get regular use every day when the missus and I watch our daily TV shows.

The BHK preamp seems to benefit the most. The closed in soundstage initially is now gone. Much more expansive.

Which brings me to today’s revelation. I’m spending this early Sunday evening after I’ve ticked off the chores list the wife has drawn up and can slouch in my comfy chair and listen to my tunes.

Ive been playing some - I will say these aren’t well mastered albums but they contain my favourite songs mostly from RBCDs and not the highest quality ones either. In spite of this, the DS and BHK combo just continues to reveal insights into those albums. A background instrument. A separation of a backup vocalist. And here’s the kicker - I don’t get fatigued listening to them. I don’t reach for the remote to turn the volume down.

Just engaging. Enjoyable. Entertaining. And downright immersive. Cathartic. Just what I needed to unwind after a week.

Thanks Paul, Ted and Bascom. In no particular order

This is a great example of why I believe there is no such thing as too much detail.

Torture test - Bon Jovi and Crossroads.

Its normally such a grungy recording so when I’m listening to it in the past it’s with the volume cranked up. But I’m not listening intently. If no one is home I’ll do the air guitar

So it is a really weird experience sitting down and listening to the song. It’s not jarring like in the past. And being able to listen into the music. The electric guitar strums. The immense level of background instruments and initial pluck all coming across.
