LHY SW-6: Snake Oil or A Substantial Upgrade?

I have finally ordered one of these switches. It’s been on my ‘list’ since I first saw that it was announced. I didn’t even buy it for audio though. I already have a fiber optic LAN and use a Lumin U2 for streaming my network files off my home-built NAS. But I may try the isolated port into my Ayre QX-5 Twenty NET2 port, just to compare. This switch should really simplify my complex network of audio and video components. I have many FMCs going into all of my devices (LG OLED, Zidoo video player, Lyngdorf MP-60, ShieldTV, Roku, etc) all on their own LPS units. It’ll be great to remove a bunch of small boxes from my setup.

Yes, your right. I confused the U2 with my Rose RS130, which has a clock in port. Hence my question. Guess I’ll have to figure this out myself.

The FO link between either SW-6 or 10 and U2 will beat most of the ethernet cables out there. I had to get a Shunyata Omega ethernet to hear better sound. Even with it I still want to have FO link upstream because I know how great FO link is between SW-10 and Lumin U2 in terms of noise elimination.

Looking forward to hearing your thought on your LHY switch.

Yeah I am curious about the clock and how, or if it improves my A/V media experience. This switch will literally be a 5:1 media converter, which will be great. Im hopeful of any improvements.

I hadn’t posted my thoughts on this switch yet but since receiving the SW-6, I was so impressed that I ordered an LHY FMC (between NUC and fiber switch) and an LHY SW-10 to put all of my gear on this unit. I was able to rid my system of all the cheap FMCs and LPS units that I was using. And I cannot believe how big of a SQ boost I received from these switches. I don’t know how or why but I am quite pleased with the results. Not just for audio but for video streaming as well. What a fantastic difference in movie play-back off my NAS. I am now positive that I have far exceeded the playback level of my (now sold) Oppo 205 w/ OppoMod LPS. After adding the switch, my center channel speaker literally moved out into my room between 1-2 feet. I am still getting used to this after several weeks as I’ve never encountered this sort of change before. I guess this is what would be considered the center channel ‘disappearing’. For surrounds, I hear things in places in my room that I have never heard them before in the 21 years that I’ve owned this home and had a full HT setup. In the ceiling, off to the extreme sides, behind me, etc. Phasing is crazy good now and far beyond what I’ve ever been able to get out of my system prior. Even on a non-Atmos title, my mains and surrounds project sound that seemingly goes off the ceiling, so it sounds like my Atmos speakers are doing the work.
Stereo playback was a bit more subtle but still provided nice improvements. That could be because I am already on fiber and even re-clocking that doesn’t translate into as big of a SQ change. The biggest change again, is phasing. My speakers were fairly transparent before and are now even moreso. Plus, deep bass is more pronounced and not as boomy. It just thunders down there under everything without drawing attention to it. I listen loud, so I don’t just listen to my music, I feel it. Kick drums that hit you in the back (reflected off my back wall), bass guitar that massages your bum and back, etc. Highs were the same sort of improvement. I am a drummer and listen to ride cymbal ‘ping’, crash cymbal attack and decay, and that’s how I determine if a system is truncating the highs or if they’re beautifully extended. Note, this is not brightness. Those frequencies reside in the ~4kHz range unlike what most people seem to think today.
Anyway these switches were one of the best tweaks/upgrades ever performed in my LAN setup. I would give them my highest recommendation if they’re within your budget.

I had a little spare time while on vacation, and I’m happy to read your great results from these LHY switches. LHY SW6/10/FO combo does a wonderful job in improving my two channel streaming too; even at lower volume😀

Where did you purchase the LHY kit?

TIA

So how would a pair of SW-6 units sound? I think I need something with 16 inputs for my patch bay. Or does just having an SW-6 connected to audio or video devices work all the magic?

My modem is connected to an Eero. That gets connected to a patch bay with a 16 port switch. That feeds an Ethernet port connected to an EtherREGEN for audio gear only.

Oh what the heck, I have MUON Pro. Never mind.

LHY SW-10 sells through BEATECHNIK only, but you can get SW-6 from a number of stores from Aliexpress site with prices lower than listing. I have not compared LHY SW10 to SW6 directly, but was told SW-10 still sounding better. Of course, together with FO/ clock link is the best way to go.

Has anyone tried the Gustard N18 or N18 Pro and care to share their experience?

Looks like the LHY SW-8 sits in the sweet spot, in terms of ports per dollar.

Why wouldn’t I want to start with one of these, as opposed to a SW-6 (which is listed at a higher price due to the clock option)?

LHY SW-8 was the first switch from the LHY line that I used to own, and SW-10 came shortly after and was called the audiophile switch from them (SW8 was not). There was an obvious SQ improvement in my system.

SW-6 was the newest and it has an isolated Ethernet input. Weng Fai from BEATECHNIK told me SW-10 still sounds better because of its superior clock. But SW-6 will sound better than SW-8.

That’s helpful. Thanks Donald.

Wrong answer, but helpful.

Well my unofficial findings are this. So far, I prefer the SW-6 over the SW-10 due to the isolated port(?). I was asked to give the SW-10 more time to run in but the SW-6 sounded grand on the first day (after it warmed up). But take my findings with a grain of salt as I’m comparing my video streamer audio (bluray concert video and 4k movies). And only this device is being compared. I’ll rotate the SW-6 back in soon to compare the two after some more time. My problem is, I dont want to put my Mikrotik switch back behind my gear again. But I’d need it if I plan to try both switches simultaniously. So I’d go from a simple one switch setup in my rack to three. I’m not looking forward to that aspect. Bought a 50ohm cable for testing the OCXO too. But either way, the SW-6 is a hell of a switch for the money.

I’m holding back on the SW-10, waiting for something like a SW10-2 when the ic board is custom made with isolation ports like the SW6. SW-8 and SW-10 is build like a tank, but they are still just modded switches to existing OEM switch boards, likely from netgear and cisco.

SW6 however is a purpose build device, so is LHY’s MC. For the impatient, daisy chain a MC with a SW6, or two SW6s should scratch your itch for network tweaks for a while.

Every time I read a review on 6 Moons, I need an intervention followed by a deprogramming. Even if the content was coherent, which it’s not, the UX/UI of the website could cause disorientation.

I think I will order an SW-6 just for giggles. Best source to buy is?

To save a few bucks on Ali Express you are giving up any warranty claim on the unit. Buy it from one of Alvin’s dealers. The US distributor is Todd at at Tek Audio in Texas.

Ordered, thank you!
Is the power supply in it good or does it work better with an external supply?
Hook the rest of the network to the isolated input and the audio gear into the four?
