M700 amps and single Powered sub with High level input via speaker connections

Am I to assume that the other two speaker terminals that are on each M700 if not used for biwiring can be used to run speaker cable to my Legacy Audio powered sub with (High level input from amplifier) Left -/+ and right -/+. instead of running from main output RCA jacks , because I am using the XLR main to power amps.

appreciate the feedback

Yes, but you’re still going to need to find an alternative grounding spot for the negative speaker cable on the amp side as the 700’s negative terminal is not a true ground.

So I need to run a ground wire from the negative speaker terminals to the ground connector on my Panamax power conditioner which is only couple feet away, my main components are all plugged into a separate Audioquest Niagra , would that be a correct option, thnks

Yes, but you don’t connect that negative speaker wire to the amp at all. You’ll need to connect the two ground wires directly to the connectors on the cable and to the ground lug on the Panamax. It’s a pain in the but and makes no sense that with Paul continually encouraging people to connect subs that way yet none of their amps have ground lugs and every amp in both the Stellar and BHK lineups have floating ground on their negative speaker terminals.

My apologies but let me clarify for my own brain lol, so I need to somehow connect a ground wire to the speaker cables spade fitting that is going into each black amp terminal(one for each amp )but it cant touch the terminal on back of amp, is this correct :man_facepalming:t2:, and of course other ends to the ground lug.

That’s what I had to do for years with the BHK 250 which has the same challenges. I just used 18 gauge zip cord stripped on both ends. Wrapped one end around the spade and secured it with electrical tape then connected the other end to the ground lug. In the end the small amount of difference you may or may not hear from doing it with RCA cables may not be worth it. Like I said if Paul wants to keep promoting that method of connection then they need to add a ground lug to their amps.

Best to ask REL tech support specifically for your setup. Before I purchased S/510s I asked REL for speaker matching and hookup info with my M700s. I hooked up the yellow and red wires to the M700 + output lug and the black wire to the ground screw on the back of the M700 and they are working fine.

REL says not to use the High Level input into one sub from two M700s.

Here’s REL’s response:

Thank you for your response, and for providing this information. Since you are currently using monoblock power amplifiers in this system, it will be necessary to use a stereo pair of subwoofers in order to take advantage of their High Level input. In our experience connecting a single subwoofer High Level to two monoblock amplifiers at the same time will in most cases result in a significant ground hum which can be near-impossible to eliminate, and in a worst-case scenario can lead to damage to the subwoofer and/or the amplifiers. Using a stereo pair of subwoofers will also heighten their performance significantly, as detailed in the following article from our website: REL Acoustics - A Guide to Dual Subwoofers

When using a stereo pair of subwoofers, the following instructions can be used when connecting High Level to your PS Audio M700 monoblocks:

** Combine the red and yellow wires of the right channel subwoofer’s High Level cable, and connect to the positive output terminal on the right channel monoblock.*
** Connect the black wire of the right channel subwoofer’s High Level cable to the ground screw on the right channel monoblock.*
** Combine the red and yellow wires of the left channel subwoofer’s High Level cable, and connect to the positive output terminal on the left channel monoblock.*
** Connect the black wire of the left channel subwoofer’s High Level cable to the ground screw on the left channel monoblock.*

If it is only possible to add a single subwoofer to your system at this time, then we instead recommend connecting it to open outputs on your preamp using the Low Level input. This Low Level connection will allow the subwoofer to safely draw both left channel and right channel signal, while still taking advantage of the subwoofer’s advanced filter circuit for blending with your main loudspeakers.

I hope that this helps, but feel free to let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

I am not using REL, I have Legacy Audio sub, but I got my questions answered, appreciate your time.

Thought they were REL- never mind.

I do believe there was another post out there with the REL:v::notes:

Just took a look at the Rel/M700 guidance that was posted and compared it to my set-up with 2 Rel subs.
First comment: I was told to let the black wire float connecting the red and yellow together as described. This has always made me feel a bit nervous
Second comment: Where the heck is the "ground screw on the right/left channel monoblock? I’d like to give that a try

Thanks

FWIW, I have M700 monos and use one REL T/9 sub. Connected with red and yellow and floating black (not connected to anything) - I get no hum at all.

I looked at the Owner’s Reference manual and pictures PS Audio has on their website and do not see a ground screw. Perhaps it was added recently, I got mine the beginning of Dec’ 23. Here’s a picture showing where the ground connection is on mine:

Mark,

Thanks for getting back…You are correct. I’ve an older version of the M700 without the ground

Thanks again
