Magico Magic (and unrelated matters)

Welcome back. Actually, you were suspended for 2 weeks if memory serves correctly. You were always welcome back after the time period had lifted.

Glad to see you back.

Good evening - You mentioned that you had completely refurbished a pair of Infinity Reference 3b’s. I have a pair of Infinity Reference 2b’s that I purchased 37 years ago. The only thing that I have done to them is had the woofers refoamed and I just replaced one of the EMIT tweeters a year ago. I have heard differing opinions on the benefits of replacing the capacitors, replacing the monster cable wiring, etc. It appears that you have done that and a lot more yourself, although I am not handy in that area at all. Now, I should add, I am having no problems with the speakers at all, but logic says that if these parts are so old that an update up to more current technology has to improve the speakers sound quality overall. Interested to hear what you found?

I’m familiar with the 2b’s. I was also going to get a pair myself, but it was a little two wide for my space and my wife would not like walking around them so I was stuck with the 3b"s. They use the same two bass drivers but bigger cabinets. Similar tweeters but has also emim midranges. Sounded really good at the showroom back then and much better than the JBL L250Ti. Much more refined sounding.
On the 3b"s, the crossover is on the back inside the cabinet hot glued to board, no circuit board. Each component is hard soldered to each other. Like the leads from the caps are soldered to the leads of the resisters and so forth. I just find the exact values of each component and replace was the highest grade component I could find, like Mundorf caps and Duelund resisters. You have to do a little soldering so it’s a good time to learn. At the same time of unsoldering the crappy parts that come with the speakers, I took out the unnecessary parts that degrade the sound like the circuit protector and the variable mid and tweeter controls and replace the crappy speaker terminals. I refoamed the bass drivers myself. You can get kits and instruction on refoaming from Parts Express. Removing the bass drivers gives me access to the crossover and wiring. I believe you can do that with the 2b’s as well.
Believe me, the transformation will blow you away. The crappy crossover parts and wiring really degrades the sound of what these excellent designed transductors can really do. I noticed it first when I changed the internal wires to a higher grade wire. Then I just about changed everything else. I do have another pair of 3b’s I use for spare drivers and did compare the after to before. Forget it, the before sounds broken.

Yeah! Another LP-S user! Truly a great cart!

Thanks for the very detailed reply, I am definitely intrigued with the possibility of refurbishing my Infinity Reference 2b’s. I have had them for so long and through five different preamp/amp setups (Dynaco, Hafler, Bryston, Mark Levinson, Stellar) that I just can’t see selling them for another pair. (high sentimental factor there, I admit!) I would rather keep them and make sure that they sound the best that they possibly can. I appreciate your insight on the replacement parts that you used, and I may need to ask you a few questions as I go through this process. I did find a schematic for these speakers online, so that may be helpful as well. Thanks again!!

You’re welcome. You can ask me anytime you have a question. I’m more than happy to see you get the most from these outstanding designs from the master, Arnie Nudell.
I chose Mundorf caps and Duelund resisters from trying many different high end brands and found them to have a synergy with the Infinity’s, so it’s not just for the brand’s name. Just to let you know. Anyway, happy listening.

Good to hear you are back.

I had mentioned to Paul that I had the IRS series 3 I think it was in the 80’s. Sad I sold those. Even today those are top tier reference. Although by today they would need a complete work over for $$$.

Sometimes bigger is not better. Case in point. Our MBR is not small. Although I have a MJ acoustics Windsor in here. That would be appropriate. However I have it below the first notch! I could honestly use a 1x8" sub in here. I really do not care for much bass. The Ex3ma put out enough bass by themselves with the “brake” all the way open. Not by a wall. Problem is 8" offerings today are junk. an 8" turned up is better than the Windsor turned down IMO.

So what is a good USB PSU without going crazy? Right now for giggles I have a Paul Hynes SR7 but it is not staying there obviously. Even the SOTM seems overkill as it is just a stock hub. Some hubs have better clocks than others. If you know what you are looking for you can pick the right thing from Startech. I would rather an “Audiophile” one. Not sure at what point it becomes overkill? Plus the DSS uses +5V for “handshake” only. It runs off internal power. So I am not sure how much I would spend on this? Perhaps IFI and done? I hope this is not OT as this thread is all over the place  OH yea, welcome back Brodric. No one is going to call you out on what you have!

Welcome back Brodric!

Capt. B…what happened to you bro? Were you down the local pub bad mouthing PSA… and some of the local fanboys roughed you up some?  Welcome back dude!

But by the way, we’re all glad Brodric is back, but no posts of him today?
Has Brodric been super-puffed/flagged?

He said something about a cruise.

According to the below “error” message, Brodric got yesterday when he was trying to respond:

it looks like he was sent on a that cruise till February 1st 2020.
I am afraid somebody may have super-flagged him.
The pleasure of having Brodric here didn’t seem to last long. :frowning:

What has he done now. That didn’t take him long… Is he on the FBI’s most wanted!

I suggest you all start a candle light vigil. I opt to monitor this thread, staring off into the digital distance. :sunglasses:

Maybe, he looked like Scarface lately. Instead of starting another inflammatory discussion (about nothing really). I‘d say this thread is suspended till 1 February 2020 when hopefully Brodric is back.
Have a safe trip Brodric.

Brodric was briefly suspended as I cleaned up the thread and sent him a message regarding his posts. I deleted these posts quickly so others will not have seen them. If he feels a need to discuss this further he knows he can PM me.

He is free to return if he chooses, but we expect him to play well with others.

Hi Dirk, I should probably divert this to a different thread, but are those the Klipsch Forte III in your forum member Logo?

No. Cornwall IIIs. I liked the look of @Chops Heresy’s on the system photos thread and his description of them so I bought a new pair of Heresy’s through an ebay seller… I only had them 10 days and I was so impressed with them that I bought a pair of Cornwall IIIs… Good deals on them as sellers are selling off stock re: Cornwall IIIs because there is a Cornwall IV in the wings. I’ve only had them two weeks past Thursday.

After 26 years with a few pairs of Shahinian omni-directional speakers I wanted to sample new fruit. They are changing daily as they ease off / burn-in… Obviously - still very early days living with both pairs but I REALLY LIKE what I am hearing… Very engaging and ‘unbelievably dynamic’!

I have the Cornwall’s at the front and the Heresy’s at the rear end of the listening room, driven by 3 x Rega Osiris amplifiers. 2 x Osiris amplifiers Bi-amping the Cornwall’s. I will get around to trying them with my BHKs, eventually! I have parked up my Shahinian Diapasons along one of the room…

If you have a subwoofer or two, match them up to the Heresy III’s and tell me what you think of that combo compared to the Cornwall III’s then?

Years ago, I had my father’s 1979 Cornwall’s, and to be honest, I’m getting much much better sound now than I ever did with just the Cornwall’s by themselves. However, I’m also in a totally different house with totally different equipment, but still. And that was also after upgrading/updating the stock crossovers and Crites tweeters.
