ok if it was a mono 1959 made from the “fly” it must be some mono copys of that master tape, send to europe or japan, for thier mono releases, right?
also were are the mono “fly” mix mother stamper for the vinyls? they must had made some mono stampers also, and hey were are the mother stampers that were send to japan, uk etc?
before we talk about the dupe made for absolute analogue, they used a uk mono master tape right, made from that “fly” usa mono master tape, that is now lost?
ps. also only for a year ago you could still found sealed mono promo 1959 six eye, why not had they done some neddle drop of that?
ps. this morning i went for the last time and compare all my digital sources of this album i have:
mfsl iso sacd file
gold cd
early first usa cd
stereo and mono hdtracks
and few others
and i had change my mind after listen to all that for almost a hour with headphone and speaker;
my conclution now is this one;
the best digital version for me is:
THE MONO VERSION
the 24/96 wav hdtrack file (not differences betwen the 24/96 vs 24/192) sound it more “centered” very good for the piano and drumm, the gold cd is almost there but in the end it was not so “genuine” like the mono hdtracks, even when the mfsl sacd sound it litle more clear at the cynbals, i still prefer the mono version (that sound it the same as the original mono cd box set)
so now im planing selling all my cd’s;
I will still have the rips anyway in my external harddrives so i maybe listen some very few times in the future.
So my go to digital album for now is the mono hdtrack, i always feel that many early mono albums by Miles sound better in mono, but i guess is just a taste or preference by me
ps.1 I was planning to buy the dsd but i read is the same dsd used for a early sacd; but long time ago i felt all the sacd were not really there for my taste(had never listen to the multitrack japanese sacd though)
I don’t have the time right now to go into all the topics, but overseas always got second gen. tape copies while in the US the masters could be used.
Stampers wear out, also mothers to my knowledge are a matter of licensing. Don’t know if they even have to be destroyed after a contract is finished.
In fact some of the Ahmad Jamal albums from the Mosaic box set were made from needledrops after the tapes burned down at a fire (others from 2nd gen copies). That’s why I took care to get the original LP‘s.
I have the original Sony SACD and it sounds amazing. On the redbook side, I have the Sony “Spiegel Edition” from Germany. It’s the Wilder remix from 3-track tapes. For reasons unknown, it sounds much better than the US release of the Wilder remix. The CD looks like the record on top, and totally black on playing side. Here’s a listing for it since it’s hard to track down info on it:
If you have a DS or DSjr, you should try the DSD download from Acoustic Sounds. It is identical to the SACD Sony/Columbia - CK 64935. It’s not as ‘forward’ as the HDtracks version; not as much bass either. But it sounds more natural and live. And you get a bonus version of Flamenco Sketches.
I got mine from ProStudioMasters, I’m sure it is identical version HDTracks as they have identical new releases and sales. I was terribly disappointed with the ProStudiosMasters version. There was lots of over modulation at loud spots, static, and just a very disappointing copy. Suggest people stay away from both companies for this one.
hmmm. I’m not sure about PRoStudioMasters - I don’t see KOB listed on their website. The HDtracks KOB sounds fantastic - it is the 2013 Mark Wilder remix - the same guy that did the 1997 Sony/Columbia SACD. It’s louder and more forward than the SACD Sony/Columbia - CK 64935, but still great.
I have the SBM Gold CD Half LP size packaging and it’s that release (to celebrate the CD’s 20th Anniversary) where the Speed was corrected and any subsequent CBS re re re issues CD or SACD (which I have as well). I think they both sound amazing but I can’t speak for the LP’s (never heard them).
I’m just in a crummy mood today. All the crap going on lately, I guess.
Everything I’ve tried to listen to today has gotten turned off within minutes.
Then I put on Kind Of Blue (MOFI) and my mood evened out; the music’s perfect. A masterpiece will always be a masterpiece.
