So I probably missed this, but on the DS jr with Huron and Bridge update, using Roon with Tidal, on the masters albums the source shows FLAC 48Khz 24 bit 2 ch MQA 192Khz. What I am hearing is the 48Khz 24bit 2 ch?
Paul - thank you for the continued improvement to the DS Jrs capability.
Other digital products are in a similar boat. See the list of “Roon Ready Network Devices” in the link below. All products with a footnote “2” in the third column are qualified as follows: “MQA decoding via RAAT is not yet available with this product.”
I guess most of us have missed this but something is coming any day now! Paul has posted this a couple of days ago in another thread.
I saw this info on the Roon forums and was very welcomed. Getting a bit nasty on the Roon forums these days over MQA as the Room people work out what way they are going to go with MQA. Will soon become irrelevant to BridgeII owners using Roon so whatever Roon does is no longer important.
Yes, we have Roon MQA working on Bridge II. We wanted to do one release and decided to add a little bonus pack sweetener into the mix of a few other goodies. Mum’s the word right now as we negotiate a few other tidbits to make our folks happy. Fingers crossed we can see something in the next week or two - but the Roon bit is working and under testing at the moment.
Reading between the lines it looks like Roon’s biggest problem might be that MQA wants a royalty for every license of Roon. And as opposed to hardware based licensing - royalties paid on a device basis - Roon’s model allows for music to be played on many devices concurrently under a single Roon license. Some devices could be playing MQA, some not - all under one Roon license. And then there’s the complication that many users will - no doubt - play no MQA at all. Ever. But it’s looks like MQA’s angling for a royalty for every Roon license. I don’t think they divulge the number of Roon licenses sold, but there are 11,000 plus registered users on their forum. One could extrapolate from there.
Secondarily it looks like Roon was angling to allow users to - optionally - perform DSP on the unfolded MQA stream, just like Roon users can do with everything else. I’ve got no doubt that that is anathema to the folks at MQA.
And I gather there’s more. But they are keeping somewhat mum.
Again, that’s my interpretation from the tidbits of info that has been shared on the forum, so I could be completely wrong.
So if MQA wants a license fee from my DAC supplier, and they want a license fee from my software supplier (roon) and my streaming service (Tidal), I’m getting “triple-taxed” to listen to music. I’m sure they’ll be jockeying to take a fee from every link up the chain. I can see why there’s a perception that MQA is really just a scheme to make money!
My guess is that they figured it would be “good enough” for 90% of consumers - or that 90% would simply not care, and that that mass would carry it over the finish line, and then the whole thing would be a done deal - adopted by enough folks so our picky audiophile grousing would be inconsequential white noise. They also seemed to assume those of us in this community were dumber than we are - that the proclamations by the the audiophile press would be sufficient to assuage our doubts, independent of credible proofs.
After announcing Paul two weeks ago, we organized a Directstream and Roon presentation tomorrow night with 28 people from across Quebec. no updates yet. I do not despair it remains 20 hours. hoping that people will not move for nothing. Fingers crossed
Ok, I’m confused. Just saw the review of Bridge II in Absolute Sound. Vade Forrester speaks of doing a listening test of the Bridge II with MQA. He states that the Bridge II only does the first MQA unfold. Overall it was a positive review. My confusion is due to my misunderstanding that the Bridge II MQA is first unfold only? Secondly, he uses Roon to do playback while evaluating MQA capability. Have I missed something? Ordinarily, prepublication waits would mean he had Roon/MQA through Roon a few weeks prior to writing. If I understand Paul’s posts and those of other forum members, the Bridge II is not ready to do the MQA/Roon/Tidal. Did Mr Forrester get a preproduction prototype? Or what am I missing?
