My comment regarding credit card debt was a general comment, aligned with my comment that people will finance anything.
(Almost) everyone just wants to know how much the payment is not the actual end of contract total debt repayment.
I say that is one of the reasons why poor people are poor.
Reading this thread and in some ways it troubles me. I was one that took advantage of those finance deals. I always would have the cash but not always up front. I know for sure I am not as fortunate as many here and probably spend way too much of my disposable income on this hobby but I don’t have many other money hungry hobbies. So be it.
Now I do know others would not and fall behind on payments and yes the US as a whole has a credit card problem. But it’s NOT a poor person problem. The poor cannot get credit. Banks have locked out the poor from having the ability to have bank account as min levels and fees prohibit them from using bank for savings never mind hand them a credit card.
In my eyes it’s a first world problem that the US has a major issue with. My friend married a woman whom he had to cut all cards. After spending time with her parents he quickly learned it was tough to them to max out and transfer ugh…. But they all had good jobs and are certainly not poor. Just paying way too much interest and being stupid.
Sorry for the rant.
I agree, and I do use credit to fund my purchases sometime too, PayPal 6m no interests allow me to enjoy this hobby more than w/o it. A reason I don’t have a problem with paying PayPal its fee. So far I haven’t paid any interests, I do leverage credits, especially the no interests offers, I thought that’s the American way It’s the discipline, you just got to be responsible with your credit and don’t over stretch yourself to pay those punishing penalty fees. I got a spreadsheet program that worked out my earning and expendable income 2 years in the future, so I know if I overspent or not and when in the future I expect to be in the red if I spend some amount today. lol… all so that I don’t catch myself outspending what I have.
People finance cars, boats, caravans, whatever, and with the staggered payments, may select a level of “luxury” (eg model & specification of car) that they might not have selected of upfront payment required.
We all make our own good and bad financial decisions. I certainly have!! We spend a fair bit on experiences these days and hope my memory banks allow the enjoyment to endure a bit longer.
Compared with putting that money into investments, that is a lousy financial strategy, but I’ve only got this life to live, and thankfully don’t have to worry about putting bread on the table.
No worries. Everyone needs a little financial help getting started in life. Either from a relative or an institution and that is fine as long as they understand the system and that interest is immediate negative income.
Financing over time without interest (lay away or similar) is alright as long as it fits the income level and other debt service the individual has.
Using a credit card to pay for hobbies (which are by nature negative income high depreciation activities) is a fools errand and can only result in less net worth (being poorer).
I spend a lot of money on hobbies and have for a long time but I have never spent the rent money to make those purchases. They are strictly cash purchases and only made when there is no other financial pressure to postpone the buy.
