P20--arrival and installation

I am with Al on this one: boring. And yes, dear UK friends, cricket is even slower and more boring

Sorry to be serious(ly boring) but even if you can’t hear an improvement, your amp is protected when plugged into the P20. There’s that.

How dare you!

I predict that brief mention (and the followup he suggests is coming) will boost PSA’s regenerator sales quite a bit.

3.5% incoming THD is pretty typical, not high.

The Gryphon’s ability to change bias on the fly with its connected preamp is neat. I look forward to @aangen 's report of adding the preamp.

Nice! This is certainly exciting. Thanks for keeping us in the loop.

Ok goofy…Al so you like to tease…eh ?

Wait till you meet up with Chip n’ Dale or Alvin and his chipmunks…

What ere ya does don’t mess with the 3 Stooges…or rather don’t
let em touch your gear…!!! :joy:    :innocent:

I know that you are getting higher better performance from your amp now…

Best wishes Al…happy listening…

Imagine that!

Please keep us updated as you have the opportunity to listen more. My bet is you will keep it plugged in.

Hey Al…while I don’t have a P20…“just a P15”

My new Parasound JC5 with 1st 12 watts class A then AB to 400 watts/channel…
on initial power up will reflect over 1000 watts draw for several seconds…then
after turning on my Oppo 205 and Emo preamp…the idle watts is 250 give or take.

Playing Reference Recording’s Aron Copeland’s Appalachian Springs with lows
in the mid 70 db and fortes who know how loud perhaps 100 db or so…
the JC5 serves up the tympani that could crush my walls with aplomb !!! the power watt
meter on my P15 barely even budges off the 250 give or take idle useage…

My former A21 with 8 watts class A then ab to 250 watts/ channel would play the same
passage but power meter would reflect draws of about 650 watts thereabouts…

It all happens so fast you have to focus on the power meter to catch the incredibly fast
power needle deflections…

Best wishes happy listening
and great adventures in music

Very very similar findings as yourself…

I find my P20 will hang in no problems for everything but action voicings on my HT Processor, they are user selectable to be able to get big rumbles without blasting mids or highs. Normal dynamic symphonic pieces or organs don’t phase P20 listening with neutral flat voicing. But P20 is not recommended for war movies for HT listening with processor selected action voicings. Neutral voicing no problems where one will back off volume for mids or highs or it would deafen you with multiple impacts. The exaggerated bass of action voicing is quite annoying to listen to anyway. A reset of the P20 is no fun if it happens and-can easily be avoided by avoiding 2KW or above listening peeks with dual monoblocks. Which I suppose is not a common practice. I bet if one used class D LFE amps it would not be a problem.

I guess I am pretty lucky never exceeding 2.0 usually near 1.2 percent incoming I also spent time to tighten all the connections in my load center hots, neutrals and grounds. The distortion overall reduces significantly after the effort. One would not think it makes a difference but it is good for 0.5 to 0.8 percent distortion reduction on dedicated lines. I have not went through efforts on all duplex’s or switches. But i suppose that might also be measurable reducing heat and distortion frurther.

Awesome Al! Like others, I was quite excited to hear what you thought. Can’t say I’m terribly surprised.

You enjoy remarkably clean incoming power. Very nice.

I believe the amplifier sounded quite obviously better through the P20. I will inform my audio guru of this. He will hiss at me I fear. So be it.

Tonight I will see what happens when I switch to 2/3 mode and full speed ahead mode. I am curious.

Thanks for the peer pressure friends. I shouldn’t have needed it but I am grateful for it.

Al you gave it a go… now you know 1st hand…Now the fun
part…educamacating you guru…Hopefully he is teachable…

The only tough part you will face is when to call it a session
and know when to break off and go do something else…
easier said than done…

If not, that is his loss and loses the guru status as well!!

Congratulations Al…

Kewl, I just switched the big amp to medium and the power use jumped up to 550 watts which is not an issue. Then I switched the amp to all the way up and it jumped to 800 which is still nothing to worry about. But the amp temperature rose noticeably and very quickly. Fun.

I guess I’ll try listening with the amp set to max burn and see if it sounds different from where I did have it set.

It’s 10 below zero here so it would warm my feet.

This is great, but be careful with your ears, and the wall too

When I draw about 1000W continuously from the P20 with the monos in class A, the output voltage goes down a bit, from 230V to around 229.5V, and the P20 gets quite warm.

Does it do that in your system as well ?

Hi guys, am I right in thinking that if you don’t load the P20 too much it does not get hot, but gets hotter the more you load it, just like a normal amp?

Yes @chris5 , that is my experience, and the output voltage sags a bit as it gets hotter.
