Paul- If you don't want our business anymore-just say so

Was it ever mentioned by anyone here why Ted made such a hasty departure?

[If you bought a new Directstream 2, your lying if you don’t admit that Ted’s updates were a huge perk.]

Incorrect. I and others bought the unit because how good it sounded, sans updates. If and when there were updates was merely a fun perk.

I do not feel cheated in the least.

I am sorry your are disatisfied by this wonderful DAC.

I love my Directstream 2. I feel cheated that the updates came to an abrupt end. Especially since this was a selling point.

You are fully entitled to feel this way.

But the angry rants and name calling have become tedious.

It is time to move on.

Let’s discuss Firefox and Windows!

They didn’t say how many updates and for how long. It should be completely obvious when buying components from a company that is constantly upgrading lines this is going to happen. Just like every other audio company out there.

I would not miss this pointless thread if it suddenly disappeared.

I apologize for calling Paul- Mister Rogers ish.

Can’t you follow this forum on your phone?

I could use another 24 hours.

Krelldog’s post has enough vitriol and venom that it deserves to be pulled as it doesn’t stay within the bounds of good healthy discourse. However, I think we’ll leave it intact as I understand a number of folks are upset. It’s always hard when expectations aren’t met. I get that. We all get that.

I am sorry the DSMKII didn’t go on forever. I remember the anger when we moved from the MKI to the MKII. And now there’s the PMG DAC. And let’s be clear about that. The PMG DAC is not the last DAC we’ll release. Someday there will be a new PMG DAC - and yes, this is ā€œMr. Rogersā€ telling you that. :face_with_hand_over_mouth: We’ve been designing and building DACs since the CD was introduced in 1982. With new knowledge and ideas we will always lean towards the update, the new model. It’s progress.

But you all knew that. Right? You all understand we’re not going to come out with the ultimate this or the ultimate that? Doesn’t exist and won’t exist. DirectStreams had a good decade’s long run. We poured our hearts and souls into that product just as we’re now doing the same thing with the PMG series. It’s what we do. It’s why we’re here. Progress.

I really appreciate all the support for the company and, though I haven’t read the beginning of this thread, I assume from its title it started off with a bit of anger. We’re going to do our best to make this transition as easy and painless as possible for those who wish to upgrade. For those that do not, the DSMKII is still one of the best DACs out there. A better, newer version doesn’t diminish that.

As a company, we’ll keep innovating and moving forward. I assume most of you would be encouraging towards that end.

I don’t know but that certainly would support it I think. Is this forum available on an app? I really do not enjoy staring at a cell phone when reading though.

When the last update came out I wrote to Ted and told him that he had outdone himself.

At that time I really couldn’t imagine how it could be improved upon. I guess that’s why I don’t feel like I’ve lost very much.

To recall Alvy Singer, a company is like a shark, it has to keep moving or it dies. We don’t want a dead shark on our hands.

I remember when MK2 came out, Paul (or someone from PSA) mentioned the firmware updates would not be as often as MK1. There is a limit to how much improvement could be made because MK2’s SQ is already near to the mountain top. It was also mentioned that the updates would be once every few years, not once every few months like MK1. The last two updates were concentrating on lowering the noise floor, and I believe Ted has made most of the improvement in that area already. Even if there were more improvement possible, it would not be as significant as the last two.

So, if there is a new way of design to bring significant improvement to a DAC and is for sure beyond the capability of MK2, what should PSA (or any company) do? There are only three solutions:

Sit on it and do nothing, until another FW update on MK2 (however long that will take) comes out, an entire new line of components that sell at much higher price, or
keep the price low to replace the existing topline product.

PSA made a consensus decision to keep the price reasonable and will give better trade-in value on MK2. I tend to think that is the best way to survive a business.

I have an old MacBook Pro (2015) that serves as my Roon Core - its not officially supported - and hasn’t been for a while now, but there are YouTube videos around that provide instructions to update to the latest OS. So I am on Sequoia at the moment with all latest updates.
For anybody that has aging hardware, there are workarounds available that enable you to update to current OSs.

I think that’s great that a good trade in price will be given to those who purchased the DSD MkII towards the PGM DAC, but what about those who live in Europe that purchased a DSD MkII? I don’t believe they have that option.

True, they never had trade-in options before. I don’t know if PSA could do anything for the foreign buyers, and I’m not in the position to speculate.

I would suggest that you keep it and enjoy it.

I don’t own a DSD MkII, I just sympathize with those who recently purchased one.

I had my DSD MkI upgraded by JK Richards and I’m pretty happy with it. Will be checking out the new PMG DAC though.
