I thought I’d try one of the DSD128 download from Octave Records, but now that I have it, I can’t figure out how to send it native from my Macbook Pro via USB to the Sprout’s USB (I’m using USB C to B that works well with my iPhone). I can get Audirvana to convert to PCM, which sounds ok other than static noise for some sounds such brooms on snare drums. When I try to use DSD over PCM 1.0 or 1.1 I get static with a very low signal. I tried Media Center 33, but I have had no luck there at all. I’ve been surprised that I’ve not found much help online for this.
I think I finally worked this out. I had to go into Audio Midi Settings and set Format to 2 ch 24-bit integer 384.0 kHz and make sure the volumes were maxxed out:
In Audirvana I set Native DSD Streaming Method to DSD over PCM 1.1 in the settings for the PS Audio USB Audio 2. I also had to set the DAC volume in Audirvana all the way up.
In JRiver Media Center I went to Tools–>Options, picked PS Audio USB Audio 2 and then turned Bitstreaming On. In the custom Bitstreaming options I set max to DSD128.
Also, it looks like the white noise/static is only on the track “If I had you” and is part of the track, not an artifact. I also hear it on the samples provided on the webpage for the album.
