PMG 512 DAC first impressions

Same here. Waiting for they work out all the bugs before getting PMG DAC😃

Playing tomorrow, I need a day of rest from my sore :person_golfing:t4:

@msaladino22 I did. I’ve been working with Fidelis for many years. Started with Bill, bless his soul, in Londonderry. Dwight and Marc are great people! The AR pre and pwr amps were sourced with the Accuphase DP570, Acora MRC-3 with WW SILVER 10 speaker cable and balanced ICs WW too I believe. I haven’t got them home yet. Capital fest and special order Acora Eramosa crosscut have added time. My MA352 and Maxima Amator combo was a bit too lush for fmy liking. I fell in love with this configuration right off the bat!.

I just purchased an Air Lens to use with my Holo May KTE, but am considering returning the Air Lens, selling the May and purchasing a PMG 512.

However, I have been reading about streaming problems on, I believe JRiver and JPlay. Has anyone tried Audirvana? I am wondering if there are similar problems. I would assume there are since Audirvana also uses DLNA, but I wanted to see if anyone has direct experience.

I would not blame you, unless they give you in writing trial period will be extended. I am not sure what they are trying to fix and why its causing more issues than when they started.

You know, I wonder if the problem is an out-of-sync issue between the streamer and the DAC. For instance, if the streamer doesn’t send a full PCM frame after receiving a pause from the control app or purge a partially-sent output buffer, when it resumes it’ll send stuff unrecognized by, and therefore ignored by, the DAC. Or maybe (probably) it’s something else altogether.

Anyway, my 40-year career was as an operating systems and server systems programmer and, eventually, CTO of a nationally ranked liberal arts university, so I can’t help mentally troubleshooting software whose back-end internals I know nothing about.

Early on in this with Roon I had to increase the sync delay setting. Not sure if Jplay or Jriver has such a setting.

I’m not sure what sync delay means vis-à-vis Roon, but JPlay has a bunch of options—Gapless, Safe Transition Mode, Force Stop Before Play, Alternative Resume Method, Resync delay—and I’ve tried ‘em all with no joy to be had.

Also, there now seems to be an inordinate number of relays clicking after a DAC restart while the streamer relaunches. Or maybe I just never noticed it before. Plus, it takes a minute after the streamer gives the all-systems-go green dot before the DAC appears on the network as a UPnP renderer. I don’t think this was the case before, so maybe the green dot just means Wi-Fi is connected, and the firmware pauses for a time to make sure the rest of the system has caught up.

Thanks for giving this some thought, though, Brian. I appreciate you trying to help.

That is not right. Absolutely something wrong there. I only hear one click when I turn from say usb to streamer. on reboot yeah the green dot takes a min to light up. More than 1 click is bad. I had that on my first unit that needed “the hardware” fix. (longer ribbon cable). I was told only the first 25 had that issue. I fear the latest firmware is step backwards for you. I am not going to download. I can wait. I feel bad for you issues.

Yup, and now it takes another minute after the green dot lights up to show up on the network. No big deal, just different.

I’d say if the network/streaming side is stable stay on what you currently have unless there’s more going on. In my case, I can live with the ticks (for the moment) because I’m no longer dropping the network. Not sure how all these firmware changes might affect Roon certification but I’m hoping it doesn’t and they can get RAAT going. Without that baseline it’s hard to say if some of this is Roon related. Haven’t reached out to PSA but was almost ready to call and ask for a copy of the initial firmware my unit came with when I received it a few weeks ago, because it worked. I’ll stay on the current version hoping I’ll have something to contribute toward getting it stable.

I have no experience w/AirPlay prior to this. I’m a PC guy and haven’t ventured into the Applesphere. I was always turned off by their proprietary nature vs PC in the early days. I was lucky and purchased the Roon lifetime plan when I purchased my MK1 and Roon still offered it.

Prior to Roon, I was streaming from a Synology NAS via BubbleUPnP. For the average user, at least at that time, it wasn’t a simple thing to get going unless you had a tech background or understanding. If I had to pay a monthly subscription I probably would have left Roon and stayed with Bubble….but, that would come with it’s own set of PMG compatibility issues as others are having now.

The culling of data Roon provides is great but I haven’t found it’s a driving factor. I do like having my old Squeezebox stuff around for workout room, etc, and it being seamlessly select-able in one app. I don’t pay for streaming services b/c of the subscriptions.

So many variables and user experience levels. I don’t envy the folks having to troubleshoot all this.

If PSAudio told you not to worry about the trial period ; no need to get in writing. I’ve been a customer for a decade. They stand by their word.

If it was me, and I am a May KTE owner, I would send the Air Lens back and purchase a Holo Red for half the price. It just works with everything and is fully UPnP/DLNA compliant. I have owned a Red for over three years with no issues.

updated the software, but still facing same issues (most of mine weren’t with the streamer)

i really hope they figure out fixes that don’t involve fedex….

I really like my AL. Did they have a lot of problems with it when it first came out?

@Hoku i just connected my PMG 512 DAC,using PMG SACD as a source. Right out of the box and it sounds amazing bass, soundstage, mids, highs are more than adequate. Lynyrd Skynyrd SACD sounds good. Manhattan Transfer CD is amazing. I’m excited what a couple hundred hours burnin will bring!

Hoku, would be so kind as to list your issues again please?

Thx George

I followed the AL discussions and I do not recall any bugs reported other than initial setup using wifi. The complaints were mostly about not having an app. But functionally, AL was pretty good right out of the box.

I have an Innuos Zenith mk3 so I have no intention of using the streamer at this time.

I for one am interested in knowing your listening results of the PMG stream vs. the Zenith while using Roon.

First, let me say that after many hours of listening/burn in, I am amazed at how great this DAC is and the drums have finally come to life (as it was mentioned they would). Ahhh, the kick pedal!

These are my PMG DAC Issues:
Screen blinking (sometimes)

Sticks on one input (after playing through that input for a long time - ie, a burn-in track from an SACD)

USB (my streamer) input loses sample Rate Display if switching between inputs - have to power down and power up from back to get it back, and only stays if I don’t switch

Trigger doesn’t work with BHK 250

After pushing coax on remote the dac just spins and spins but never connects (clicking sounds continue, even after I turn it off with remote so need to do full power down and unplug)

Red (no input signal) with Optical, although it works and is connected

Thanks kindly. I’ll keep an eye/ear out for these issues. I’m about 15 hrs into burnin looping an SACD from the PMG SACD. Exciting times ahead.
