Possible benefit of an audiophile fuse in P12 Power Plant

@George_P I totally agree with @brett66 what works well in one component may not in another trust your ears they wont let you down …

In my P600 for example, the entire current drawn by the PowerPlant flows through a single 10A fuse, and in that, you would want to find a fuse with the least amount of resistance as possible, yet properly protect the primary side of the device. (I use a Littelfuse 313 rated for 10,000A@250v interrupt rating at 0.0083 ohm) The greater the current rating, the less resistance is found up to the point where some use a direct short with wire, yet lose any protection afforded by fusing. This is what many of the aftermarket fuse sellers are trying to do, get lower resistance and modified melting points to allow more current to pass, but this too can be an issue since some are not even UL approved or rated.

However, on my P10 as is the case in the current production of PowerPlants, the current is protected by the circuit breaker. It too needs careful selection as their are many providers and the internal resistance can vary greatly. The fuse, which protects the control circuits, would not impact the primary side of the regenerator, that’s the role of the circuit breaker.

Thanks, Barsley! So, by saying the fuses on the current PP’s would not impact the primary side of the regenerator, do you mean that fuse type would not affect sound quality?

To answer that question isn’t always that easy. Fuses are more than what most give credit for. A quick-acting fuses load type is resistive, while time-lag are capacitive, however, inrush is very low on quick-acting, and very high (generally 10 times rated current) on slow-blo. As time passes and inrush after a few hundred cycles changes the element itself, and is why it is suggested to change fuses on a cyclic basis. Here is an example;

Now having said that, it leads me to say this. On my P600 it would matter greatly, but on my P10 it really doesn’t. However, it’s your system and your investment, and I say you can do whatever you may wish. On my P10 I use a Littelfuse 285 rhodium plated, but I have used the Schurter gold flashed (which is what it was shipped with) and a couple of the big dollar ticket ones as well. The difference on the P10 wasn’t noticeable.
