Problem with DSD on Directstream

My DS has suddenly developed a problem with playback of DSD tracks. I just get a lot of static and very low volume. PCM is fine.

Its been great on DSD all this while.

I tried rebooting Yale and the problem persists. Loaded 1.2.1 and still have the same problem.

Help, please.

What are you streaming from? JRMC?

If so check that it is set properly for DOP

I checked my settings in JRMC 20.

Tools > Audio > Audio Devices: set to PS Audio USB Driver [ASIO]

Under Device Settings: Volume Devices : PS Audio Perfectwave DSD

Output Format: Output Encoding: set to DSD over DOP (also tried with NONE)

Channels: Source no. of channels (also tried with 2-channel stereo)

Bitstreaming: DSD

Checked Control Panel in Windows: Sound: Deviice set to PS Audio Perfectwave DAC

Somehow your volume isn’t 100 in JRMC or the OS or some kind of DSP is running (e.g. ReplayGain, channel folding or outright EQ, etc.). See the BitPerfect test How To if you don’t know all of (the weird) places you might check.

Ted, please remind me. When I playback the Bitperfect track should it say Bitperfect on the DAC display?

To isolate the problem where DSD tracks play with a lot of static and very low volume I switched to the mac mini as the source playing back with Audirvana. This eliminates Windows and JRiver.

Same problem … anything other than DSD plays fine but not DSD.

Did you get the green checkmark and BitPerfect on the display? With both Windows or the MAC? The symptoms you report are exactly what’s expected if the top byte of the DoP data is corrupted (i.e. volume control or DSP) and conversely it’s something that I’ve never seen the DS do in released code. Since apparently PCM still seems fine I doubt that it’s a cable, etc.

Ted … I think I’ve resolved the problem.

When nothing else worked I turned off the DS at the back, inserted the SD card containing the Yale firmware and rebooted.

Playing back the Bitperfect tracks now gives me the green tick and Bitperfect on the display.

DSD tracks are now OK both with the Mac and the Windows server.

All is well. Thanks.

GOOD TO HEAR!

Gee I wonder if there is some way to pgm Bridge2 to auto update the DS firmware as well. It would be a great feature.

The SD card method seems to be a snag point for some. I have never had that issue, with God knows a million firmware updates, but I have spoken with many who have and can relate to their frustrations, especially on a Friday night.

Thanks for reporting back. I don’t know how it was failing for 1.2.1 and Yale but going back to Yale would fix it, but never the less I’m glad you got it working.
