By the way, innuos also does Spotify (via spotty) and airplay (via shairtunes). Extremely versatile.
Of course you have the option with Innuos to switch from Roon to Sense, and it takes about 10 seconds.
Maybe that’s why PSA bought a few Innuos units.
Genuinely looking forward to the release of this.
I expect this might actually show up on my “to buy” list. I’d like a Stellar Phono, but my NuWave is “good enough” and I listen more to digital music than records, for-better-or-worse. There’s been a lot of “I’d like to buy” things this last year, this might be the first “I-have-to-buy”.
Color me excited.

Yes. I am really enjoying innuos sense. A bit of freedom from roon ecosystem. And being able to use apple music or even Spotify is a great way of discovering new songs (both AI are so much better than qobuz’ or roon’s).
At this point of information, is the AirLens best described as being a renderer, especially given the DLNA aspect? Can’t be a streamer cause it does not access the internet itself… PS: I did not spend time balancing a tonearm on the weekend. But I do admit to much fussing over directional speaker dampers and getting them screwed in just so.
Is that the definition of Streamer? I hadn’t thought about this before. Is Streamer access to the Internet? Or is Streamer a device that receives data over a network connection?
@stevensegal will probably call me the DLNA police now but…
“renderer” is a specific thing within the DLNA architecture.
I’m still calling this thing a streamer even if it’s only “streaming local” sources. A few things, like Spotify and Tidal Connect, still stream “from the Internet” even when using those native apps. So, if AirLens supports those it will be “streming from the Internet”.
Everyone wants to call their endpoint something different these days so, depending on what software you’re using, the AirLens will be a different thing. Streamer makes sense to me as a generic term here.
But, it’s also why final specs and supported platforms I’m eagerly anticipating. Just how many different hats will the AirLens wear at launch?
This (not having access to the internet) is not true.
My understanding is the kit will have an “Ethernet” input that can be connected to your router/modem or other internet-connected devices.
(But perhaps I misunderstood your statement.)
Regards.
And Roon does not even call its endpoints “endpoints” any more. None of this should be as complicated as the manufacturers make it to be.
How can you be the DLNA Police and start talking about electronics wearing hats? Do the DLNA Police wear deerstalkers? We’ll have to start using hat acronyms, like FWH, THAT and BPPH.
Some of us were “streaming” from local files before internet streaming existed so, yes, streaming is management of stored digital files, wherever they are.
I think you can own this topic. I always thought a renderer was a posh name for a plasterer. That said, I think I have a claim to the “ip everywhere” title, judging by my home network:
The whole “ROCK is an appliance” thing has been absolutely true. I put it in a stock NUC and it had been trouble-free from day one. It’s actually more stable long-term than even my Sonos setup.
See above. When the Linn DS devices came out in 2007, there was no online streaming, they only used local network storage. We still called them streamers. Normal folk had little idea about home networking and the only device easily available was an iOmega network drive.
The first modem I used was in 1980. That feels like a long time ago. We used them for routing Telex. I don’t suppose many people remember Telex.
Tomahtoe, tomato; boot, trunk; bonnet, hood; muck boots, rubbers!
What’s in a name?
I gotta think there is zero chance this doesn’t have an RJ45 ethernet port. Who said it doesn’t access internet? That wouldn’t make any sense.
Edit: unless it is wifi only, but it would still access the internet (wifi router to Airlens)
I think the modern parlance is that a streamer pulls a stream actively from the internet… even if only via use of its designated app or web interface (that is not Roon… unless it is itself Roon hardware). A search for “best streamers” also only seems to return results that have an active capabilty to pull music from the internet. I am myself open to calling something a streamer that can pull music from my local network NAS though. But if I have to use someone else’s product to push music to the AirLens, then it is not a streamer for me. It is an endpoint perhaps. At least until there is a working PS Connect app.
Years ago I was surprised to see a (male) client with a bill for “suspenders”. In England suspenders keep your stockings up, but the USA they keep your trousers up. Here we call the the trouser things “braces”. Now braces straighten your teeth. Braces also used to be used to support joists in buildings, but now they are called acro’s. It’s all too much to process.
Huh?
The AirLens will perform both of the functions you described, AFAIK.
Does that fact make it a “Streamer+”?
I’m bilingual, English and America, with a very heavy dose of the king’s English from my time and genes in India.
Every once in a while I get confused with terms and more often by spellings. Or I blurt out some term buried deep in my memory, such as cellotape, drawing room, drawing pin, dicky box.
I think I’ll stick to music and wine!
So do you prefer Claret or Bordeaux?
I believe the proper spelling is “whine.”
