Claret is easier to spell after imbibing a lot of wine except when Americans pronounce it in a faux French way! And then there is plonk!
In the past when I tried that plug-in it did not seem very reliable. But that was a long time ago so things may have changed. Adding Squeezelite as an option should be cleaner (for some people, installing plug-ins can be daunting; installing LMS itself is dead simlple). Since the Air Lens is supposed to work with Roon or UPnP/DLNA, I would think there must be some sort of application switcher already. That’s what the Sonore Rendus do. Shouldn’t be hard to just add Squeezelite.
One problem with JRiver is they don’t support Tidal, Qobuz and similar services. They claim all those services are losing money so won’t be around long enough to justify the development costs. I have never been impressed with JRiver support. Logitech Media Server (Squeezelite) do. I use it on my second system with a micro Rendu and have no problem playing Qobuz tunes mixed with my own.
My understanding as well. Since Paul described the Air Lens as galvanically isolated, that suggests a wired ethernet connection.
The Open Championship taught me how to pronounce it.
Indeed an ethernet connection is promised. That does not make the device a streamer though. But perhaps it could get a firmware update via ethernet to enable that at some point. I do like my LMS setup. But it reminds me of Radio Shack kit radio hobby projects. Not what I would hope for from PS Audio.
Also Château Fleet Street, for the well read.
If you want a good novel about the evil of wine, try “The Irresistible Inheritance of Wilberforce” by the guy who wrote Salmon Fishing in Yemen.
It’s a good, dark book.
I just have to write again, “Huh?”
Totally don’t understand your assertion…
Regards.
I am just saying, without a PS Audio branded app that is not Roon, the AirLens is an incomplete product. Compare with many many of the alternatives mentioned in the thread or any stereophile magazine list of best streamers. As a niche, audiophile fanboy product, fine, it is that. Actually the whole PS Audio product portfolio (ecosystem) is missing an app. Forget remotes. Now, if they want to say, our bad, we were ambitious (like you like us to be) and tried to do do more than we should have and will make good on that in a year with an app that will work without modifying hardware, then I could still be buying.
What if it is more like a Rendu in its operation?
I must admit, you just about have me sold on the Rendu’s. I like that they are super compact. I waited four years now for an Octave player, using a Bluesound for FLAC playback (never happy with the sound but so convenient to stream from my NAS or the internet) and a Windows Surface for DSD over USB in the meantime. I could be happy with a Rendu using just USB until PS Audio eventually has a package offering. There are a number of used bargain listings as well in my area. Plus that Mano with I2S could do and is a local product for me. And I am open to Raspberry tech.
Understood.
I disagree with you on the pending kit not meeting the definition of a streamer because it does not come with a proprietary application software, but maybe that is an element of a standard definition for such things I am simply not aware of.
FWIW/Cheers.
I wonder if a list of free interface control software that will work on this device to stream Tidal and Qobuz can be started??
I still don’t understand how this will be controlled for people who are anti-Roon (for cost reasons or sq reasons, for example).
What is the list of available interface control alternatives? It sounds like there will be some, but let’s get a list started. If PSA can comment as to which they’ve tested on the unit and can say work well, even better.
Agree 1: Does not need a proprietary app to be a streamer. I guess it is a “uPnP Streamer” regardless anyway, since you can cast to it. Agree 2: Looking positively forward, also wish to know what are solid, reliable solutions other than Roon. So iPeng is for using with LMS. Does anyone know, would at least DSD64 reach the AirLens with iPeng and LMS, even if via DoP? What about DSD128? Since you can cast to it, presumably Plexamp would work. Would just need to make sure that Plex did not get busy downgrading the quality via transcoding. Would 24-bit FLAC arrive as 24-bit FLAC? But maybe DSD would wind up as PCM for example? Other ideas? How about DTS Play-Fi? Or MonkeyMote with Foobar uPnP? How about PS Connect?
A lot of great questions, @Carousel. I’d like it if PSA could weigh in on the ones they can address.
One feature that AirLens apparently lacks and it would be nice to have is the ability to mount a USB stick or portable hard disk and use it as a source.
Use case: a visitor brings along music he has purchased (or recorded if he is a musician). If the streamer does not allow to mount the portable storage device, then I need to go to my media server and import the tracks; this is too cumbersome; also I am importing in my library music I do not own.
I do not know though if a UPnP Control Point app would allow to select tracks from a container connected to a UPnP renderer (the AirLens).
In my second system I run LMS on an old Mac Mini playing through a Micro Rendu/Matrix X-SPDIF 2 into a NuWave DSD via I2S, controlled with iPeng. DSD128 plays fine. The NuWave manual says it plays double rate DSD over DoP but my limited number of DSD256 files also play fine (no way to tell if there is downsampling occurring somewhere in the chain but I have no reason to think that is the case). I’m hoping the Air Lens will do at least that much and that they will include Squeezelite so I can control it with iPeng (Qobuz also works fine with this setup).
Hi All, am still waiting to hear back from PS Audio on how to stream DSD128 with an AirLens without Roon. I have DSF files on a NAS that an LMS and a Plex server as well as a Bluesound Node access via share drive mappings. I use Foobar with this set up too. I have the same files on a PC too that puts out a Twonky DSD signal that my Sony Bluray picks up.
In the meantime, I have been googling some. Quite a few Asian firms are putting out equipment now that have I2S HDMI outputs. But compatibility with PS Audio DACs is not assured. A number of the firms also have apps that access not only the big known streaming services but also home NAS drives. The Silent Angel Munich M1T streamer from Thunder Data and its VitOS app look particularly good. A number of the principals of Thunder Data have backgrounds in networking. They also produce an audiophile network switch (Bonn) and DC power supplies (Forester). Has anyone tried these with a PS Audio DAC?
I am no longer interested in little boxes with other little boxes hooked up to them with special cables blah blah blah.
Having said that the pictured device is a kewl looking little box!
That is the biggest issue when using network streamer. You have to deal with many boxes in an attempt to tame down the network noises. That’s why I built my own dedicated music server to send local music files to the DS dac via Sotm USB card.
