While researching some subwoofers (I admit, a limited number of subwoofers), I found that the high-level imput impedance of an REL S/812 suboofer is 150,000 ohms, producing virtually no load on an amplifier. By contrast, the high-level input impedance of an SVS1000Pro is 20,000 ohms.
You get what you pay for comes to mind.
I have a REL, and I certainly didn’t pay for 150K ohms got them for free.
REL is tops imho. Always used high level as well. High power amps, hybrids and tube amps.. always great results.
I did have a brief ownership with JL 113s. Great sub especially if you involve HT.
REL just does a great job and has an expansive product line.
Agreed. I just wish they would offer the Carbon Special in something other than piano black. At least gloss white as an alternative, like the old RxxxSE series. As far as speakers go, for me at least, piano black is not my first choice.
I’m with you, I’d like the gloss white option as well. Wonder why it is not offered.
My latest REL is the classic 99 in walnut. It may not be for everyone as it provides a very good bass “floor” vs the thump of a 812 or greater.
But it looks like a nice end table off in the corner vs traditional shiny box…
A difference without significance. Even at 100W of power into an 8ohm speaker, the SVS is only at 0.04W - hardly a load factor. It’s only the voltage that is driving the high-level inputs.
I heard REL discontinued the s/510 and S/810 - I love my S/510, but wonder if I will still need it when I get the PSA FR20s…
although maybe I could get the white S/510 for the newly discounted $2000 and paint it black to match my black one (which still goes for $2999)…
If you keep your sub(s) it will give you maximum flexibility to position the FR20’s for best imaging. (Hint - their imaging is to die for)
Reminds me of a song. Too bad the sub isn’t red
Good info mahalos - maybe I will buy another S/510 then and add the FR20s… oh I do love this obsession…
+1! Subs are as much, if not more, about getting the best LF room response as they are about adding bass.
