I have a pair of SVS ultra 16s , I have them run from my pre amp using rca Cable left and right to the SVS line level input. I use a y connector on the subs input and input to the left and right. The SVS subs have a 2 channel amp in them . I like to use them to their full potential. I hope this helps.
I am building a new alternative system Rudolf. All tubes. Based on the speakers (and subs) as shown somewhere above. This set of MC’s is my base to fall back to. Brand spankin’ new. Today I bought a very, very nice AR LS22 that I’m going to pimp up beyond any recognition (PUBAR). In the same transaction I got an BAT MK55. Still deciding what’s going to happen with it. If you like I’ll keep you guys up to speed. I’ll do that in a seperate thread.
So Hot !!!
Not being allowed to travel to the USA and exercise my dearest passion of all (flying airplanes) this year, because of that Chinese flu, I restructured my yearly budgets and aimed them towards audio pleasure. Throwing money “down the tubes” one could say… For me it’s all about learning, trying, measuring, reading. And then…? Listening…!
Ronald, always nice to be able to witness a new system being created.
We have postponed our vacation to Texas from April/May to October, looks like we will need to postpone again.
It are last years savings we seem to have donated to KLM. But on a bank you can not get interest either and due to the friends we have in Texas we want to go there as soon as the “Chinese Flu” as you call it is somehow under control.
This years savings went into thermal isolation on the dormer in the attic to keep my daughters room and me and my Stellar Gain Cell DAC in the home office cool.
New living room system has to wait, my current system still works And I first want to build a now cabinet where I can store the CD’s and vinyl records with the new system. Active DoliFET (Abacus) is the plan, Mola Mola Makua is the dream.
I think I shift the whole trip 1 year ahead. We’ll see what happens then… And dreams are supposed to come thru… Right…?
just trying to get a picture in my mind…
are you doing this?
and… don’t want to go down a political path, but this “ch***** flu” terminology gets me so damned angry.
I doubt those countries who have handled COVID responsibly and whose leaders have not politicized it and whose citizens are following the rules are calling it (whether seriously or in jest) the “ch***** flu.”
They are masking up and distancing and not going to bars and they are taking it seriously and they are caring about their community and they are getting it under control.
I really weep for our country.
Ok, back to subwoofers.
Sorry I did not think I was clear when I was trying explain how I had mine hooked up. I am unable to do the nice graphics that you are doing, that would make it easy but I’ll try to explain. I am running a Left and right RC cable from my preamp to my subs at the subs I have a Y connector splitting the signal to the left and right inputs on the sub to take full advantage of the two channel amp in the sub here’s a picture of the back of my sub. I hope that explains it a little bit better sorry again for not being clear.
gotcha. That was my next guess!
(The graphics are simply grabbed from the SVS owner’s manual PDF)
They show going from preamp’s Right/Left into two subs, but unfortunately they show the front of the sub, and don’t show the connection!
I’m running my Dual SVS 16 Ultra’s from an Anthem AVM 60. This pre-amp has 2 Mono subwoofer out connections. I simply have them connected to the LFE jack on the Sub. The SVS manual for the SB 2000 Pro has a whole section on "Connecting Multiple Subwoofers or “Going Dual”. Here is a link to the manual.
yep, that’s where I was getting the screenshots. Good idea to post the entire PDF.
I’m assuming the LFE input spreads the signal into both channels of the amplifier.
I’m not so sure that the amp has 2 channels, since it is only driving one speaker. I suspect it does a sum of the two signals and then sends it to the Sledge amp, which I suspect is a Monoblock.
I tried to find some specifications to determine if it is 2 channels or one channel but couldn’t locate anything.
If the preamp has a true left and right subwoofer out, and if you have your subs located on the left and right of your soundstage I would recommend connecting the left wire to the left sub and the right wire to the right sub. If your subwoofers are located in other positions in the room for sonic reasons, then I recommend that you send both left and right signals to each sub.
If the pre-amp only has a mono sub out, then it is much simpler to connect one wire to each sub using a Y splitter connected to the pre-amp. Some pre-amps have 2 mono sub-out like my AVM-60, In this case the Y splitter would not be needed.
When I received my SVS subs I have mine hooked up and a dedicated to channel system I called SVS and they suggested it would be best to hook it up the way I have it.
I would give SVS a call they will answer all your questions their customer service is outstanding and they always answer the phone immediately any questions you have they will surely answer good luck and enjoy.
well, I ordered a pair of SVS SB-2000 Pros on monday, and they arrived today. (Well, one arrived; its mate supposedly is on another truck.)
But I put the one that DID arrive in place, and it’s waaaaaaay too big for the space. So, I’m sending it (them) back. I tried moving it to the corner, more behind the chair, but same thing. Too massive for the space.
For reference, I have a pair of wee little Cambridge minx 201’s behind the magnepans. They are like 8.5" cubed. I also happen to have a single minx 301, which i placed behind the maggie to get a sense of size, and that’s about as big as I’d want to go. It’s like 10.5 x 11.5 x 12 or something.
So, i think I might go with a pair of REL T/5i. They’re about the same size as that Minx 301.
The pic below has the 301 behind the right speaker, and the 201 behind the left speaker.
If it was a dedicated listening room, well, then, the sky’s the limit. But in the living room, not so much.
For the record SVS was GREAT about issuing an RMA, as it’s a no-risk deal, with free return shipping.
I’m using a pair of REL T/5i woofers with Maggie LRS speakers powered with PS Stellar M700 amps and am really pleased.
While all rooms are different, aesthetics were important in my room and I have been very happy with the sound. At the moment, I have the RELs crossed over substantially below the 15 click setting with the woofer level well above the 15 click starting point. I am using a stereo pair and used the REL recommended tracks.
I feel like I am getting a good sense of the impact and decay from the subtle bass drum whacks on the “Sneakers” sound track that REL recommends. Then I fine tuned with the Wasserman/Warne track they recommend to take excess “bloom” out of the system. I’ve got to say that I drastically increased the woofer volume after I procured the “Sneakers” soundtrack. I was always happy with the crossover set fairly low.
Awesome price/performance IMHO in my system. I feel like I would need to spend substantially more money to gain better results.
Are you using RCA’s or the Speakon (high-level) connections?
(And if Speakon, are you jumping from the Magnepans to the RELs, or going from the amp itself?)
Have also been reading about hum when using the high-level connection, so I’ll likely be going with RCAs, which I’ve already got cables in place for.
With the M700 amplifiers and the Magneplanar LRS setup I am running the Speakon cable supplied by REL directly from the amplifier.
Since the amps are Class D and I am running them in balanced mode, I floated the ground wire of the Speakon cable per RELs instructions. Then I did run RCA cables from the unused RCA input to the RELs to eliminate a wee bit of hum which I actually didn’t hear at first installation. One could also loosen a amplifier chassis screw and attach the Speakon ground to that for a ground.
I didn’t think about running jumpers from the Maggies to the RELs, but if that works well (I’ve never investigated the possibility) it would be a neat solution for your setup as pictured.
I never had heard of it before, either, until a few weeks ago on this very forum!
It’s too bad the SVS sub didn’t work space-wise.
Glad they are good to work with for returns.
