OMG!!! These look incredible!!!
Can’t wait to give these a listen, but the price creep has most likely pushed them out of budget range, unfortunately.
Well, just to clarify, there are no rear firing woofers. There is is a rear firing tweeter (for ambience and to correct for HF sound power response), but this is adjustable and defeatable.
Side firing woofers are no different with room interactions that forward firing drivers, as the system is omnidirectional down there.
With any speaker, you don’t want to place is very near the side wall. Placing a speaker closer than a couple of feet to a side wall causes comb filtering (by these early reflections). Important localization and tonal cues are then fused into the same perceived sound arrival (skewing the perceived tonality from the comb filtering and harming stereo imaging and localization) if within around 5 ms from each other because of the precedence effect. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precedence_effect
In any case, the woofer placement lends to big reductions in enclosure vibration and isn’t cause for any additional placement issues. In fact, room and placement friendliness is very important to us, as we want the speaker to sound great in your listening environment.
Doh. I was trying to respond to Bad Beef. Oops.
No worries! I for one, love the look of the new design.
JBLs?
need banana for scale!
What’s the height/width/depth?
20K will likely price me out; Low to mid 10K will be lot more appealing, myself included.
They are PBN 2!5. Made using JBL drivers.
I like the look of the boxes themselves, not sure the grey grill cloth works for me, but that is an easy thing (grill cloth color) to make optional. Will all boxes be the same black? Black is ok with me, but if it is a painted finish there could be optional colors (some or all at higher cost). Personally I don’t care for the “feet/stands”; the basic design could be modified, or better yet, offer several styles. If that is not possible, perhaps the owner could make (or have made) their own “feet/stands” using design parameters provided by PS Audio.
Having said all that, it’s the sound that counts. I’m sure those on the fence about style could be convinced it’s acceptable if the sound ticks all the boxes.
One other thing that I just thought of, is the front face of the grill flush with the side panel? if yes, is the grill necessary to prevent diffraction from the side panels?
As it stands, there are 1/4-20 threaded inserts on the bottom with leveling feet and as a provision to use aftermarket spikes.
So finally regarding the feet, the crowd more or less speaks with one voice and those wooden pieces are removable in case they stay… sounds good. I’d love to see a light wood sample or animation. Hopefully the whole frame from all sides could be fitted with wood inlay.
I asked my wife in the meantime…the feet are no go, too…but…she also liked the design (elegant)…and…she liked black!!! I was puzzeled as I think it really dominates the room, but hey…
This was a really successful waf test as my wife usually considers more or less all speakers ugly. So please work on the fully active version and after listening I make an attempt as soon as money is loose
Even if the feet have more WAF… if they don’t pass the first gate, BAF (Buyer Acceptance Factor), WAF doesn’t matter.
looks fantastic, and impressive engineering! cant wait to see more, and hopefully hear them at Axpona!
I like the look
Look forward to seeing them in person and hearing a well broken in pair, possibly at Axpona 2020. Until then there’s not much to say.
I don’t like the stands. Might like them if they where the same color as the speaker cabinet or a different material. The speakers don’t look like they come from the PS audio family of products. Other than the stands I think they might have a decent acceptance factor from the general public. But what do I know, I have dorky Maggie 20.7’s staring at me in the living room.
Ditto
Showed the photo to my wife… Looks cheap and Chinese made was her first impression. It’s an opinion, but sorry… Thought provide you the data point.
She really like the v2 design, btw…
If they decide not to offer the stands in black also to match the speakers you can always do as Chris said and use spikes or Gaia’s if the chance of tipping doesn’t bother you. Also steel outriggers are available from multiple sources for cheaper than Gaia’s. But how many of you complaining about the looks of a not released speaker are actually in the market for a $20,000 speaker anyway?
