My own reference usb is Inakustik. Havent tried wildly praised Wireworld Platinums but as i again started to feel Curious to sound lacking of resolution, firmness and feeling of live event, swapped back to Inakustik. Yes,it is all there again. Much more fun, and sounds “right”.
You definitely want to upgrade from 5$ cable. Lots of choises to pick. You need to try them at your system.
No idea of the powerless usb’s,i dont have any. Maybe someone else has experience?
Yeah, seems counter intuitive. Wonder if there is a reason for this. Design engineer have a little too much to drink the night before? ![]()
Maybe the thought is that if the contacts are on the top there is less chance of dirt fouling them?
We wouldn’t be having this discussion, and people wouldn’t be making choices on the basis of what they are hearing, if the differences were truly “minute.” For example, the difference between a lower mezzo-soprano and upper one or soprano is quite substantial.
I agree with highstream. After reading his post, #215 2 days ago, I did a test comparing 3.0.6 to 3.0.0 listening to Diana Krall’s cd Live in Paris. Playing “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” on my PerfectWave Transport, with 3.0.6 installed, I paused mid song, mid phrase, installed 3.0.0 on the DAC, and hit play. Her voice dropped lower in tone compared to 3.0.6. And to my ears her voice had more depth and character. Thank you highstream for your fingerpost in the right tonal direction. Tonal accuracy does come first.
That would be consistent with RJ45 and RJ11 jacks.
I tried to install 3.0.6 three times and each time the file loading bar didn’t go all the way to the right. It always stop very rapidly .Does it matter ?Because I see on the screen 3.0.6 …
Your post reminded me that I wanted to try a second time. I think you statement is very true. Superb articulation and that upper presence makes it seem very clean and alive. It’s very appealing, in a similar way to how record companies have long tailored pop music for the masses. Then I listened for tonal accuracy… Two tests I tried this time: I listened to some of the contraltos on this list: List of contraltos in non-classical music - Wikipedia; then I put on Miles Davis. Just to take the latter as an example, the lower end presence - upper bass, lower midrange - that underpin his trumpet sound is missing; it’s all upper end energy. Now, I’m feeding (speaker) amps directly from the DS. If there’s a preamp in there, then it can very well be a different ball game.
The tonal balance has unmistakenly changed from 3.0.0 to 3.0.6, and not in a good way. The mids are definitely lacking with 3.0.6. There is more detail in the highs and soundstage, but 3.0.6 doesn’t sound as “analog”/natural… it sounds more “digital” than 3.0.0. It seems to me that when picking a “Golden Build”, PS Audio likely needs to audition the full suite of PIC/FPGA builds holistically when a change is introduced. The FPGA compilation that sounded perfect with whatever the PIC build was for 3.0.0 may not in fact be the best one to couple with the PIC build in 3.0.6. They definitely interact with each other and change the sound, as anyone who’s listened to 3.0.0 vs. 3.0.6 can easily observe. As head scratching as it may be why that would be case and as frustrating as it may be to have to deal with that kind auditioning, the ears don’t lie…
Ah. More good sense. Thanks.
My experience exactly. Having tried 3.0.6 I’ve gone back to 3.0.0
DSj owners, any feedback on the 2.02 vs 2.01 or 2.00?
I might think that the PIC code influence is probably less on the DSj.
Haven’t had time to make the change yet.
It’s just the way the connector works when mounted atop the PCB. To have the pins go the opposite way we’d have to mount the PC connector on the bottom of the PCB which requires a secondary hand soldering operation. In later models we did just that, though
the fact that some of our products have the pins facing up while others the opposite is pretty confusing.
Long term engineering plans are to eliminate the need for the SD card altogether and have just an ethernet connection for download.
Makes perfect sense now. Is there a reason for SD cards on some pieces and USB ports on others?
Thanks for the constant feedback and support. It is very unusual as you well know.
Forgive my ignorance, but I started new with my DSD sr. on 3.04.
Where do I get 3.00? I do not see it in the archives…

Paul, are you saying future plans are that an Ethernet cable would be needed for DAC firmware update downloads? If yes then I would not be able to do updates.
I went back to 3.0.0 for a spell. I had made a speaker isolation and location change and wanted to compare. I like both these OS firmwares.
