Snowmass 3.0.5 vs. 3.0.6

I agree Lonson…it’s like owning two terrific…different sounding dac’s…for the price of one…

Please do NOT add an Ethernet port, or at least only an Ethernet port. Add a USB port, that way you can use a USB drive or preferably a WiFi dongle.

No one these days wants to run Ethernet cables.

It would be hard to use the bridge without an ethernet connection! LOL

I was talking about updating the DS itself haha. Not the bridge. Maybe I’m confused.

Yes, please keep an offline update option. Updating exclusively via internet might be dangerous (connections drop, power failures etc), and prone to transform the DAC into a very, very expensive paper weight.

The loss of power during an update won’t be a problem. There will be plenty of flash to hold the complete old system while the new is being loaded - only when the new is loaded and passes integrity checks will it be used instead of the old.

I too don’t want ethernet to be the only way to upgrade: many customers want it, but IMO having any audio equipment connected to the net is asking for noise if not worse. The TSS will also have provisions for a USB stick and also, perhaps, the ability to play a file which is the upgrade.

The plan currently is to allow WiFi and Ethernet, potentially with an option to use USB if network updates are not feasible.

These plans are still in their early stages, though, so do hold me to them. Something might come up that changes these plans. Your feedback about not being able to do updates over Ethernet is important information - I appreciate you sharing it.

Amen to no connection to the net!

I also do not have a direct internet connection. What about keeping the SD card as well as the proposed new methods?

Yes, ethernet or wifi. There’s plenty of ways to get ethernet to your unit. I use a power line ethernet pair and it was super easy installation and works great.

A USB connection from your computer will likely put more noise into your DAC than an ethernet connection.

Thanks for the response. Since TSS will likely be my next DAC, I will rest at ease.

We’ll make sure no one ends up stranded so fear not

If you are talking about updating software, the USB port would be for thumb drives, not a connection to a computer.

Holy mind games! Same result.
Back to 3.0.0 for now.

Playing a file to update the unit is how Rockna do it.

I don’t even remember where I first heard of it (more than a decade ago), but it’s so simple I might as well put the flash RAM on the FPGA for any box I build.

It’s good to know you won’t leave anyone stranded. Ethernet or WiFi only updates would leave me stranded. However, if you indeed do go that route and leave me stranded I would either (1) use any future PS Audio DAC as is with no firmware updates, or (2) not use PS Audio and instead use the built-in DAC in my McIntosh A/V Processor which is pretty damn good and very close to the DS Sr sound.

I see this ethernet solution is not popular, as expected. Seems like the easiest solution is to just supply a USB port. That way you can use a USB stick or a USB Wifi dongle for updates. Best of both worlds.

I love the ethernet connected option. But hey, I’m used to being unpopular.
Seriously though, I do as much through connected ethernet as I can. It frees up wifi for things that must have it. But I’m an IT guy with a sophisticated network that includes fiber running to my music room so you might say I’m “hardwired” that way.
