Snowmass 3.0.5 vs. 3.0.6

I am reminded of this hilarious 30-second Right Guard deodorant commercial from 1979…

I had preferred 3.0.0, but now prefer 3.0.6

I’m in the middle of some cable changing so can’t test for myself. Looking forward to it soon though. Thanks

Just installed mine as an SD card arrived from PS Audio. (Man, Kevin always does great customer service).

Just got a brief listen and I like it so far. I have not heard anything after 3.0 – that’s where I stopped.

Same here

I just listened to 3.0.6 from 3.0.0. It sound more detailed, better layering, cleared vocals to me. Quicker bass, more live in sound to me. I’ll keep it.

I wouldn’t swear to it, but I do think it sounds better. Crispness in the bass. Maybe. Dunno. I’m leaving it in.

I just installed this today and I am very happy with the results. The thing that struck me most was another drop in the noise floor! On one of my reference CD’s that I have listened to over and over again I was surprised to here a bottle cap hit the floor of the studio! Never heard that before. I was enjoying the update so much that I almost forgot to switch over to my turntable to try out some new vinyl. (psst don’t tell Michael Fremer)
Nice tune up for Snowmass.
Thanks PS Audio!

@lonson - Lon - could not agree more, Kevin is the man… he takes care of business very quick with amazing follow up. Every person that works at PSA is a hustler and has total customer service… that comes from the top Thanks @Paul

@bootzilla got a survey going… I’m loving 3.05 so 3.06 did it for me; however, like @brett66 said… thank goodness for flavors…

Listened to this RR with 3.0.0 and swapped with 3.0.6; I have to say immediately there is more details on the highs, the overall micro dynamics become more evident than 3.0.0’s subtlety; a bit more emphasis on the bass as well, so as result the stage is bit closer than 3.0.0; not yet sensed any dryness at mid, everything still smooth as before; I have to say a bit more toward D2D LPs; so far I got a lot of liking to 3.0.6 :yum:

I do not understand how this is possible if they did not change anything but it indeed is!

They did change something. It’s just in the code that does everything but process the audio signal. PIC code affects FPGA code and vice versa. It’s not completely understood or predictable.

Add to this all the other variables each of use have, our space, our speakers and signal chain, our ear/brain connection.

I’m giving Aught Six another try, and I must say I’m liking what I hear more so than last time. Could have been my mood, the food I ate, the tracks I played…

From testing 2.02 on my DSJ (the latest version that corresponds with the release of 3.06), I am finding a similar thing in my system. There is a tad more detail and bass seems a bit tighter. There is also a lot of upper midrange / presence region in the latest firmware. I found it too much in my system so I have wound back to 2.0 (the first Snowmass for DSJ). On the way, I went back to Huron briefly. Wow, what a difference!!!

Yes, more “live.” The question is how is it being achieved in terms of tonal balance.

As I said it’s not a change in tonal balance. It’s a change in noise that you (and many others) may perceive as a change in tonal balance, i.e. it’s not a purposeful or reproducible change except for the similar changes wrought by lowering noise with each release.

What a pity that there’s nothing heard except „better“ from those with the best chance to compare with a parallel set of DS DAC‘s, one of the most revealing setups and some of the best ears…PSAudio folks. Even if it would be just an opinion affecting a specific setup…we only hear any concrete description for major FPGA releases…not even about its different compiles in the past. PSA is keeping quite monosyllabic when it comes to describe what they hear…just „better“ or „worse“. I’m wondering what’s the reason for this as much as I’m wondering that we hear anything at all :wink:

I am listening to 3.0.6. For the first time at this moment. I listened to 3.0.5 for an hour and now 3.0.6. I will not use the term better, or worse. It is obviously different to my ears. I am guessing that anyone jumping from 3.0.0 to 3.0.6 would be in for a shock as they are so very different.
To me 3.0.5 is very forgiving of problem recordings. I am guessing that 3.0.0 even more so. Listening to 3.0.6 I have reached for the volume control in terror on two out of the last five songs. (The last being a Guided by Voices song).

So. Very. Bright. ( like, oh my god)
I will persist but I am afraid.

So, after living with 3.0.6 for a bit, I’ve switched back to 3.0.0. In my system, I found 6 to lack energy in the frequency spectrum that brings life to music.

I noticed right away with 6 that voices were soft and somewhat overwhelmed by other sounds, and initially thought that was more “natural” if not exciting — thought I could live with that. The killer for 6, however, was the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass. With 0, the brass had that blatt and shock that one expects when brass goes forte. With 6, nothing. No blatt, no shock, just monotony.

I’ll just add that the difference between 3.0.0 and 3.0.6 was not subtle (in my system). So, I’ll be sticking with 3.0.0 until the next major update!

@brett66,

Thank you for posting the historical versions screen shot. I am sure many of us were wondering the same. I’m on 3.0.4 and didn’t even realize there was a 3.05 until the 3.06 thread started.

Do you know which versions are linked to what people are commonly referring to as Snowmass V1 and Snowmass V2?

Thanks, Alan
