I may revert back to DMP 3.07. Should have stuck with that initially. I found 3.07 the best upgrade to that point. Didn’t get much of a chance to become familiar with 3.10 before updating the DAC. I’ll let you know how that goes.
Just as an aside, this thread is about Snowmass (the DS and FPGA code is my work). I have nothing to do with the DMP: DMP feedback is probably best put on the DMP thread.
If your bass is the biggest issue that’s probably the Snowmass release interacting with your setup. Have you had a chance to try things like changing toe-in, your seating position or readjusting other tweaks you might have made for the DS in the past?
Great work on Snowmass!
Not to push but when do you think that will be? For how long do you keep the development ongoing? Just curious.
Thanks Ted. I thought perhaps the change in DMP update may be affecting things, is the only reason I mentioned it. I have not had a chance to make any adjustments. I will have more of a chance today.
This must be a new record, asking about the next release before the current one is released ![]()
I’ll keep working on software for the DS and DS Jr even if, for example, I’m working on other hardware or software. Snowmass and the TSS work is an example. I’ll keep trying to find a way to put each new idea into all DAC’s whose hardware supports it. Right now there’s just a little hardware specific code in the DS that’s not in the DS Jr and there will be some new hardware in the TSS that the DS and DS Jr don’t have.
The timing of releases depends on all sort of things, the least of which is the calendar. Redcloud was an idea I had right before RMAF last year based on a problem report from a customer. Huron was a planned release rolling out new features in the FPGA, bridge, etc. all at once.
I let Paul know if I have a new idea that might be worth a release, he suggests things he’d like changed in an ideal world, there’s feedback here…
As a rule I have a few ideas for the next release or two when release goes out. What I don’t know for sure is if those ideas will work, and if they work are the results worth it. I’m listening to an idea that sounded really good on paper, but I can’t measure any change and I thought there would be a noticeable one. I still have some other paths to go down that I’ve been working on for a few releases.
Also as a rule I don’t ever think I’ll get as big a change on the next release as the current release, but at times a release will open the doors for better work to follow - or we discover something that matters more than we thought it would.
Ted.
Is your FPGA code protected?
I assume an unscrupulous manufacture could not use your code?
Just curious.
I sure hope PS Audio has Ted’s brain heavily insured by Lloyd’s of London. . . .
We’re so lucky that Ted loves this work and is so damned good at it!
Loaded easily Fri eve. Left DS on but not playing music overnight. Saturday I spent hours listening and again today. I listen at about 80db which is 100 on the DS and 28-33 on the BHK PRE
On the first CD I thought a normally clear voice was a bit spitty. Or was that the way it was? Or was it me becoming adjusted? Or something in my gear? There wasn’t a ‘moment’ of change but I didn’t notice more of that as the cd played.
Initial impressions: more life via rounder or bigger soundstage. Very clean. Dynamic, esp midbass. Detailed. Closer to reality. Good recordings are very good. Sucky ones still suck.
I only listened to CDs so far. Haven’t read any of the above comments so I’m free from influence of others.
Well then, pretty early in my listening I found my analytical brain had turned off in favor of the pleasure side.
Too bad DOPAMINE isn’t a mountain in CO.
I probably shouldn’t answer that question ![]()
My philosophy in general is that I can innovate faster than anyone who might steal it - so they’ll always be behind. And just as important, anyone who is too cheap to figure it how to do these things on their own won’t believe that some of the expensive parts or weird code I use are necessary and will lose the magic and synergy of the whole device.
Nice Lon!
I have repositioned my speakers and seating position. Definite improvement all-round. Moved speakers further apart and changed toe in. I moved my seat a bit further back. I think bass is going lower and why I found it fuller. I have had issues with my room and bass in the past. I will continue adjusting. Overall this is a significant update. Seriously impressive. Thank you Ted.
All these positive comments. . . really a great way to whet the appetite. I can’t wait for this to be added back to the “Accessories” page in the Products section so that I can order a card for this and DMP 3.10.
I can’t wait for it to appear here ! https://www.psaudio.com/support/downloads/
Yeah, I know. I have had bad luck (due to my skills no doubt) with downloading to the cards, so I purchase them from PS Audio. Adds an extra layer of anticipation. . . I seem to like waiting for good things just a bit longer. . .
Setting it to 3000ms (resync delay) worked for me. No more fade-in when switching songs of different sampling rates.
I am using streaming from Roon core in my desktop to DS(bridge 2) via ethernet. I stll get pops once in a while as most of my collection is DSD tracks, however with Snowmass being more vivid, clear and analogue I feel like I am listening to Vynil.
Yeah I tried 1000 and it wasn’t enough. Jumped to 3000 and now I don’t miss anything from the sudden start of a track when changing sample rates. My system is Roon -> Squeezebox Touch via ethernet -> DS DAC via Toslink. (I get 192kHz on my Toslink connectors but not everybody is so lucky.)
When does Junior drop?

Ok, I just loaded snomass beta. My initial impressions of the sound are very positive. Definitely more 3D, and perhaps a tad more liquid. Imaging seems to have become more pin-point in quality than with Redcloud. Although I need to listen longer to be sure of my findings. However I might have found my first bug.
I was just playing a 24/96 bluray Steven Wilson audio disk on my Oppo 103/Vanity HD combo and the sound mysteriously muted for a few seconds in the middle of one of the songs that I was listening to. I have not developed a repro scenario for this yet as this has only happened once so far. But since I have listened to this disk dozens of times and this never happened before, this seems to be something new.
I’ll see if I can come up with a repro scenario. Not sure if this might be content specific or not.
I think the Beta is over? At least I assume so as the Firmware is up in the download section!
You are probably running to the code that looks for sample rate changes, clock starts and stops, etc. If you have a flaky connection multiple bad samples can cause a temporary mute until a valid stream returns. You might want to put the bit perfect test in a loop and see if it ever drops out for a second.
