Snowmass DirectStream Sr. upgrade - Available in the Downloads Section

All I want is my Album Artwork to appear faster.

I know…that sounds silly.

Ron

Just a suggestion. Switch to Roon. The albums are displayed on the TV and on every browser in the network. And if you like, you can also scroll the song lyrics.

Yes, I’m using Roon and did try that option.

It’s just tooooooo big. :flushed:

Maybe I’ll give it another chance.

Thanks!
Ron

Take a discarded smartphone which you don’t need anymore cheers

Yes, and I could put that on a little stand by the components.

Since I like pressing only one button on the Harmony remote, I wonder how I can get that smartphone to turn on by itself with the Harmony and always have Roon displaying.

For those with the fade-in issue and using Roon, did you try adjusting the Resync Delay settings?

I tried 500ms, 100ms and 50ms. I’m pretty sure all delay settings remove the fade-in issue.

That may also be available in JRiver, etc.

Thanks for the reminder. I have to poke around JRiver to see if there are settings. I assume there are.

Remember all… run the bit-for-bit tests! May save tons of effort.

Yes
The version available for download now is the same as the original version released.

So, the version of Snowmass currently available is the original, and not the revised version - i.e.: the revised version that will allow proper loading of the new BridgeII update is still forthcoming?

ADDENDUM - Never mind! I found the answer to my question (see my post below) . . . Thank you!!

Ted, your update is AWESOME! I had been reading the posts from the beta testers of Snowmass and couldn’t wait to load it. I did so this weekend. I have a little playlist I loop to break in various components. I ran that overnight through the DS Sr, and got to sit down and listen Sat night.

Wow… I was just blown away. I generally listen with the lights off and all my displays are dimmed. My system does dual duty, audio and video. I don’t use my AVR to drive the front pair. I use the BAT/Dunlavy combo for the fronts. Mid way into the first song I had to turn on the lights and get up and check that I didn’t have both the rear speakers playing through the AVR. The music was so 3D I mistakenly thought I had the AVR
with the additional speakers on.

I found the answer that I was looking for here:

Until we fix the bug in Snowmass there won’t be an update appearing. In the meantime, simply go back to Red Cloud, then update the Bridge, then go back to Snowmass.

In general the DS needs to respond to samples as they arrive - it can’t arbitrarily add more that a few samples without, for example, causing the input buffer to overflow.

The ramp itself isn’t the issue. When the DS encounters a transition, it mutes (i.e. replaces everything with 0’s) until valid data starts appearing. When that valid data works it’s way thru all of the processing (upsampling, etc.) to the volume control the ramp up starts. Without at least a tiny ramp there will be a click if the music is loud at that point. I.e. the ramp starts at the last moment possible to not lose new data.

The only real issue is that the ramp is too slow for most people. A minimal fix is making the ramp time user settable. I may come up with something better (I have no idea what) so I don’t want to say that the next release will let you set the ramp time, but I do want to say it will be addressed with a fix at least as good as being able to set the ramp time.

Ted, In speaking about a fix in the “next release”, are you referring to a new mountain top in, say, 6 -12 months time possibly?

So, quick and dirty. Old Motorola G2 set to delivery status, no SIM card, no PIN, only Wi-Fi, no apps (standard only), energy-savings disabled. Does not look too bad, with a stylish mount it could really look good and the picture is better than the one from DSD.

Yes, I should have been clearer. It won’t be in the “.1” bridge patch fix coming out soon.

Listened to SACDs yesterday… first time w Snowmass. These were Japanese imports of Steely Dan. Have to say the sound was the best I’ve heard at home, and among the top 3 I’ve ever heard! No fade issue. Dmp to DS to BHK pre.

Saturday I also listened to an Elton John CD I have had for years and years… Caribou. But, clear as it was, there seemed to be something… not… right. Sounded like very low level cellophane crinkle. Oh great, I thought, a tube going bad or the added resolution is uncovering crap. Then it occurred to me to play it in my studio system. It’s on the disc!!! Cannot figure out how that could happen. If the CD was rotting, how would that transform 1s and 0s?

Many thanks!

Ron

I’m a Roon and DS/Bridge II user, no issue here.

More inportantly,
How do you set up that cool display of albumart and lyrics.

Worth picking up a cheap tablet just for that!

This may be slightly off topic but compared to modern LCD displays, that “MS-DOS” circa 1985 style of font rendering and the “Roon” text not being left-justified racks my OCD nerves. Yes, I shut off the screen to avoid visual distractions during listening, but I want crisp text and album art because the LCD should capable of it. I forgive it because the work of @tedsmith is just so downright amazing.

Wait, the LCD screen is capable, right?

Worth remembering Ted says the DS measures better with the screen turned off.

That, and the fact you can put a larger screen displaying the current track goodness on a larger display makes MS-DOS text ok.

I tried the Roon/Chromecast display thing on my TV in the listening room, but its way too clunky on a wall mounted 65", so a smaller tablet sat on the hifi rack is a good idea for me.

I do miss “Theatre View” from Jriver, which was the way I used to run my file based setup before Roon.

Not sure how to set that up, but hey!
Chromecast tablet?
