We have purchased quite a number of them and that’s exactly our plan. The problem with another transport is the SACD part. There aren’t any OEM available SACD players we can base our product around now that Oppo is closing up shop. We know how to build our own killer CD, DVD, maybe even BluRay player with even better performance than DMP but we’re not sure how important SACD is and that’s our hesitation. For the moment we have stock of DMP chassis.
We have drives available and we can make a killer DVD/CD transport that might even BluRay but not SACD. SACD is the problem child for us. If we made a player without that all would become simple, better sounding, and easy and reliable to make and use.
The only company who Esoteric sell their VRDS mechanism to is dCS.
I wish you would make such a player without SACD and without internet connectivity for cover art etc. Maybe make it part of the Stellar line. With outstanding performance on the sonic front and good functionality for the user could be a killer product!
Esoteric supplies DCS currently. They also supplied Wadia when they made disc players.
Since OPPO digital is shutting down producing products will PS Audio make a 4k player that can take its place and also double as a transport? Or should I have one for video and then a DMP for all my audio disc sources?. Or would you make a product so I can use both from the same player? I’m trying decide if I buy a Oppo 205 before they are all gone.
Unless there is a major shift in the philosophy/direction PS Audio is going, they will not be producing any video hardware. Buy the Oppo now while you can!
RIP Oppo Digital: Company behind Blu-ray players ceases development
Thanks!
Would PS Audio be willing to strike a deal with Oppo to keep making just this transport drive just for y’all and then PS Audio to sell to any another company that would like to build there player off of it?
As was stated earlier Esoteric currently only sells their drive unit to DCS and has made it known that they are not in the OEM transport business any longer. So I suspect that when the terms of their current contract with DCS ends then DCS will have a problem also. MSB also just announced and started delivery of a five figure transport based on an Oppo unit that they will have to modify when there supply is gone unless Oppo’s parent company spins the transport mechanism business off as a separate entity.
We are proposing just such a thing but we have to see what they say.
I assume therefore you see a future in physical disc spinning?
Oh, goodness yes. In my experience streaming is convenient but not up to snuff quality wise. And, besides, even if it were I still have a huge library of physical discs as do most of us. That’s not going to change any time soon.
I thought I read somewhere that the Esoteric VRDS transport system was to be phased out and that they were going to some type of proprietary memory player like the DMP. Something about a memory system is far less expensive to build and the sound quality is much better than the VRDS.
That’s right. Esoteric are putting “digital lens” type RAM buffer technology in their more recent disc spinners which means the disc spinning mechanism doesn’t need to be as good as VRDS.
So the plan is not to import all your physical discs into Octave server?
Paul, I am gladdened to hear you say this…I, too, have thousands of CD’s that I want to enjoy ‘hopefully’ for many more years to come … The DMP is such a special product. I gave all my streaming kit away to my mates 13 year old grandkid because I couldn’t be bothered with it since the mighty DMP supplanted it and all my other digital sources !!
I enjoy my CD’s by listening to them streamed from my server.
A new product genre is emerging, the “network transport”. Esoteric have just built one, N03-T. I think that is the way of the future.
