Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 2)

Yet another favorite trio. Booked Craig back in early spring 2022, he was incredible.

While we didn’t necessarily book them we did assist with underwriting the performance at Coda Fest, in a slightly altered trio format. Daniel Carter, William Parker, and Gerald Cleaver.

Revisiting this excellent box set that reissues concerts by Ms Fitzgerald over a 30 year span.

Showcases her skills and with great accompanists.

To quote Allmusic.com

“ Khomsa is the heroine in the movie Bezness, and also inspires one of many musical themes from Tunisian films and theater documented on this CD. Oud player Anouar Brahem has performed these pieces across a decade with different ensembles, but for the first time they were recorded in one studio setting. The instrumentation varies in size and de-emphasizes Brahem’s role as a frontman. In fact, upon listening, this could just as easily be credited under the direction of the brilliant accordionist Richard Galliano for his role is heard more often as the lead instrument…………The themes are luxurious, rich, beautiful, and organic, with no wasted motion or excesses, and there is a feeling of being on a journey………….this is a beautiful contemporary statement reflecting the cinematic forms Brahem loves, mixed with European classical and improvisational sensibilities, professionally rendered, and well within the tradition of world jazz and the clean ECM concept.”

I really like this recording. There’s a certain thoughtfulness to it.

Another interesting singer with interesting arrangements, Anita O’Day with the Gary McFarland Orchestra.

This is the Verve Master Edition, and it sounds better to me with “Phase” OUT on my DAC rather than IN. This material sounds better on the Mosaic of O’Day’s Verve work, but that wasn’t on a shelf right next to me. . . .

O’Day grew on me, I really love the sound of her voice and I grew to identify and enjoy her unique phrasing.

The deluxe Love Supreme arrived from Japan, and it’s excellent. The listening concluded with Trane’s mono recordings of the last two tracks. Pretty cool even with one or two tiny recording/mastering blunders during the drums.

Yes, I got mine too. I compared the main album to the same that I have in the SHM-CD version of “The Complete Masters” and think I hear a subtle difference. . . . Great music.

Thanks again for pointing it out. I have the SACD, the recent Acoustic Sounds released vinyl, and the Seattle vinyl of ALS as well. It’s catching up to my 5 copies of KoB.

Ha! I think I have even more copies of ALS than KOB. I have the Verve SACD, the Analogue Productions SACD, Japanese SHM-SACD and UHQCD, “The Complete Masters” SHM-CD version and this version and a 'seventies LP copy. Oh, and the Pure Audio Blu-ray as well.

No promises I won’t buy one again! One that I would like to have is the much-lauded Platinum SHM-CD but man is it pricey.
