Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 2)

1968, and throw Pharaoh Sanders into the mix. A sublime listen this morning.

Now I have a yearning for some Alice Coltrane. The above, while still spititual, is in a different vein than say that with Pharoah Sanders.

She surrounds herself with top notch players and arrangers, but yes, adult contemporary.
Her productions are mostly excellent.

I just played this recording, Ecstatic Music… (not the first time) nice and loud with all my attention. I was reminded again of how musical these recordings truly are. Followed it up with this 2014 gem. Talk about loading the box with great players. I believe that you can play these recordings over and over and never completely grasp all of her significance. But it’s certainly worth trying…

Yet another exceptional one.
There was a time when I used to play Ecstatic Music to decompress while driving. Did the trick on more than one occasion.

The exchange of ideas regarding Ms. Krall was inspiration enough to seek out a jazz singer that is beyond reproach, or question. Billie Holiday’s Decca’s 40s recordings are so supple, she was in her prime. Something left for all of us to consider, over and over. The streaming services have these sides and are worth exploring if you prefer to rent before you buy.

The set you posted is superb! I only wish the sonics could be better as they are typical of their era. Believe it or not I misplaced my first copy of this fine set ordered a replacement whereupon I relocated the lost set.
Anyone desiring this fine set, drop me a PM and I’ll ship it out you.

Yes, it appears there is more to come … interesting that the Qobuz version of Volume 1 is 24/48 and the Pro Studio Masters download is also 24/48, whereas the download on the Blue Note site is listed as 24/96 (which I suppose could be a typo):

While I doubt I could hear the difference between the 24/48 and the 24/96 versions in a double-blind test, I am inclined to spend the extra few bucks to get the 24/96 download.

FWIW HDTracks also only has it as 48/24. Now I’m curious if the download from Blue Note is actually 96/24?

I think she started out as a jazz pianist. Her early albums I found to be very good. Then she started to get by on her looks and voice. I mentally compare her to George Benson’s transformation.

I’ll pass.
