Wadada Leo Smith’s Golden Quartet Tabligh. Yet another fine avant-garde release from Wadada’s Golden Quartet. Opening with Rosa Parks, no real fire here, mostly restrained and introspective. Closing out with Tabligh, bringing more energy to the game. A fine release on Cunieform Records. This time around the Golden Quartet is represented by:
Vijay Iyer
John Lindberg
Roland Shanon Jackson
Wadada Leo Smith
Satoko Fujii Orchestra New York Fukushima, featuring an incredible avant-garde line-up:
Nels Cline
Oscar Noriega
Andy Laster
Ellery Eskelin
Tony Malaby
Curtis Hasselbring
Joe Fiedler
Joey Sellers
Dave Ballou
Natsuki Tamura
Herb Robertson
Stomu Takeishi
Ches Smith
Satoko Fujii’s summation of his feelings regarding the Fukushima-Daiichi tsunami, its consequences and impact on the the people of the Fukushima prefecture. Specifically, the failure of the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear reactors and ineffective response by the plant operators in the early hours of the event.
This set is from 2000 (recorded in 1996) and I’m listening to it for the first time because I want to compare it to this year’s MTB (Mehldau, Turner, Bernstein) release ‘Solid Jackson’.
A very nice, approachable record, the band covers Jackie McLean, Cole Porter, Horace Silver and Wayne Shorter.
I guess these guys were the real up-and-coming thing back then. Interesting to see how they have matured over the years, and the directions they have chosen.
I enjoyed revisiting this one this year–I posted it on the other thread as I don’t generally post in this one. I like this date and yes, you can hear how these now seasoned pros were sounding 18 years ago!
In 1996 Mark Turner was also playing in Kurt Rosenwinkel’s band.
Great music that was just released this year.
Kurt Rosenwinkel – Guitar, Piano on The Next Step
Mark Turner – Tenor Saxophone
Jeff Ballard – Drums
Ben Street – Acoustic Bass
Brad Mehldau – Piano on Zhivago
Thanks. I didn’t know about this one.
