Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 2)

New record from MTB (Mehldau, Turner, Bernstein). I like it just as much as their first record that was released over 20 years ago (Consenting Adults). They cover tunes by Hank Mobley, Harold Land and Wayne Shorter. I am a big Mark Turner fan and he sounds great here.

These guys can probably finish each others’ sentences they’ve been playing together for so long, but they definitely are not taking it easy. Very nice.

Devin Daniels Quintet - ‘LesGo’.

Devin Daniels is a 23-year old saxophonist, a protege of Herbie Hancock. This is a really nice set recorded live in Los Angeles. His bandmates are all 20ish LA-based musicians, trumpeter Julien Knowles is really great.

They cover Coltrane, Parker and Monk. Daniels’ original compositions are impressive.

Awesome music, sure - and really fine sound.

I guess some folks have problems with the provenance of the material on these Ezz-Thetics releases. I’m still thinking about it. Some of them sound amazing. The remastering engineer Michael Brandi knows his onions.

It’s great music. I wish they weren’t doing this this way to be honest. But . . . I’ve bought these sessions they reissue for the most part more than once, in some instances more than twice, and when I have checked these out I was not as impressed with the sound as you have been, but they may be getting better, I’ve held off buying any but the Ayler for a spell.

These two sound excellent even with my cheap little streamy thing.

Interesting that you’ve been underwhelmed by the sound…as a general rule, or just some specific cds?

I’ve purchased quite a few of them and I’ve been happy with sonics on all of them. That being said, some of them (New York Art Quartet, Bill Dixon/Archie Shepp…) are completely new to me, so I don’t have a basis of comparison.

I’ve had a lot of these before in several different iterations. I haven’t necessarily been “underwhelmed” by the sound, but I haven’t been overly impressed when doing comparisons.

My enjoyment or lack thereof may be impacted by the truth that I am really disappointed in hatology for going this gray market route. Truly though I can’t think of a single instance where I was “wowed” by the sound.

I also have to note that I utilize all the time a Decware ZROCK2 which allows me to surprisingly tailor the sound and in most instances compensate for deficiencies in digital mastering. If I were a captive of the original presenting of the discs with no tailoring, I may feel differently.
