I would not tap of an single sided signal of a balanced XLR output of a pre amplifier though, if I’d have to do that I’d search for a different sub with either XLR input, but preferably high level input to connect parallel to the Harbeths or Maggie’s…
Currently have Magnepan 1.7s with a REL Storm and am very pleased with the extra “sound” the REL seems to allow the Magnepan to produce. I just purchased a pair of REL S/3 SHOs with the intent to place one behind/near each of the Magnepan. To mirror what others have shared…whether you end up with one or two subs, do give the RELs a listen.
yeah i’m really tempted to bite the bullet and get a pair of RELs. I’d likely go with the T/5i for that space. In white.
Are those better spec’d than your Cambridge 301?
the Cambridge has more power (300W vs 125W for the REL)… Guessing that’s Class-D vs Class-AB, right?
You make a good point, Rudolf. The Cambridge sounds good, so am i getting anything special with that REL, or is it a lateral move?
If your happy with the Cambridge and it fits your needs just get another one.
I got this link from @stevensegal:
“
The sub is from these people. https://www.bkelec.com
They have a huge range of products and finishes, are very cheap and ship anywhere. They are perfectly OK. They used to make on a subcontract basis for REL.
REL only do black or white and they have a massive profit margin. This 400w sub cost £550 and the REL S/812 is £2,300. Trying to get one on home demo, will not spend that money unless it is worth it, not all REL dealers have demo stock as it is quite a new product. Apparently it is a step up from the REL 5/SHO.
“
Since they do also wood finish and are in the favorite price range. But again, I’d only go down that route it it gave me any benefit.
Yeah, I browsed around their site, which isn’t the most intuitive! Also, didn’t see the US in the list of countries they ship to. (Or is there a US distributor?)
My vote will always be no subwoofers. But, if you need them, then my answer is two… based on personal experience prior to not needing them.
Indeed, the offer of bk electronics subs is attractive, but their WEB-site? It is 2020 and they are not offering 50 penny products.
Agreed, I have just space for a single sub and it would need to be placed 3 ft (1 m) to the side of the left speaker, while L and R speakers are only separated 6 ft (2 m). So subs are difficult in my room, hence I look for real full range speakers, which are hard to find.
My single sub is about 3ft to the left of my speakers, which are 7-8 ft apart.
BK are a nice little business in Southend (location of Rega, amongst others), Barry probably does the website himself and it is perfectly clear. It tells me "you are not paying for me to get some swanky web designer". He provides all his contact details. He even has a telephone, which is more than a lot of people these days.
Yes you are right in that and it is probably rather a bonus than a downside, it keeps cost down. The price is not too high, if it takes me too long to replace my current speakers, might add a sub to the current speakers and that price is very reasonable for that.
The problem is, in case I do that, the CFO in the house might block future investments, while a really good set of speakers is still considered the best start. Although I start my endeavor in the living room with a new TT, cartridge and phono stage.
Following the Linn philosophy as well.
Clearly there is a lot of strategic planning going on. My wife only complains about speakers. The BK makes a good plinth for a rather tall sculpture.
I’ve just upgraded a tonearm, got two MC carts repaired (my Koetsu Urushi is for sale!) doing the phono stage thing as well. Using the Devialet for MM, but external for MC. Two box solution is the likely result. I spoke to the dealer for my analogue and PS Audio and he told me the Rega RP8 has been selling the best, a great deal with the Alpha 3. The RP10 package is better but a lot more expensive.
He also told me that he’s sold a few PSA Stellar Phono’s, but they were all anonymous internet sales, although one left some feedback.
I hope those ceiling tiles are glued down.
I am currently using a pair of REL T/5i woofers with a pair of Magnepan LRS speakers which are newly sitting on a pair of MagnaRiser Airborne stands. Very pleased with that combination.
I chose the smaller RELs so the woofer would be quick and mate well with the Maggies. LRS are driven with PS M700 amps with RELs coming off the speaker taps. Had to run an RCA cable for ground to cure hum in the RELs.
Lol , I am waiting for them to start falling.
So far so good, hopefully I will not have to take them down and glue them up I am getting to old for that. When I finished the basement 25 years ago it was not intended for my listening room.
I gathered it was a basement from the ceiling beam stopping the rest of the house caving in. So I also presume the wood is lining a brick or concrete wall. Is there anything behind them? If not, a layer of Gyproc or similar could do the trick.
Just as a nod to SVS. I’ve had two SB2000’s for two years and the experience was flawless. They’ve gone to a new home and I’m Looking at REL 212/SE’s.
Yes ,8” thick concrete wall with a layer of 2 inch close cell foam 2x4 for studying and then paneling. I am not going to address any issues in the room it does sound good, but I’m planning on moving to my retirement home within the next 2 to 3 years so it’ll stay as is it’s actually serving me well at the moment.
