Subwoofers - need to get your opinion

Rythmik F series have both high and low level inputs and you can buy two of them factory direct for the price of one comparable model REL or JL as no dealer involved. Can also be ordered through Ascend Acoustics but shipped from factory in Texas. I have used the Rythmik subs with speakers from Nola, Verity Audio, Reynaud, Spatial, Vandersteen and Fritz. I have a pair in two different systems.

You will be very happy with two fathoms in a big room or one in a smaller room. It’s simply a magical range of subwoofers…very expensive…but, worth every penny imo. The F112 is the best sub I have ever heard. If you can afford the gotham then you may want to check that out. I have been told the gotham is simply jaw dropping…but, that one subwoofer is probably almost as much as a 2020 kia altima.

And I think Galen is right with regard to matching them to the room. We all want a pair of Gothams, but unless you have the cubic yardage for them, it would be a waste.

Well, similar to Uncle Paul’s huge IRS Vs, there is something to be said for the ease to pressurize a room with a massive number of drivers(big and small) all individually putting forth a very small amount of effort in concert together. I have no hard data on this…but I’m just saying arguments can be made in that direction. Cough!(get the two gothams lol) Hey, I just want to see the pictures and drool

It is a concept. Mostly in folks’ imaginations.

Yeah! Badbeef, don’t come in here with your logic and well thought out advice and ruin our fun.

well I leave you guys alone and look at the responses - Unfortunately have been sidetracked by the thing that supports all of this - WORK :frowning:

so catching up - the team have narrowed it down to three main stream subs REL (Paul’s favorite so I’m told) SVS and JL Audio going to cross the Revel 15 of my list cause it looks like i may need a masters to dial that sub in.

Mapping out who is selling what in Australia looks like SVS are being carried more by the Home theater side of retail while the REL, JL Audio are being carried more into the high end Hifi stores.

Speaking to my dealer he decided on the REL and JL AUDIO and Focal subs just because of his market and those leaning towards SVS in his mind will probably move up to JL Audio more for the musical side but did described the JL subs as fully sick subs (Australian slang - expression that means excellent)

so here is my current plan thanks to you all

  1. Going down the Stereo sub path (may be a two step dance )

  2. Off to listen to some SVS subs first locally

  3. Road trip to my Dealer (another state 10 hours each way by car) organized to listen to the REL (810v812) and JL (e110vE112vF112v2 - Fathom) should be an interesting afternoon my dealer reckon he already knows what i will get but lets see …

road trip planned for two weeks i will report back, thanks for the input and thoughts and helping me narrow it down

Those are all very good subs to choose from - I think you are gonna like all of those. In the end I think the F112s are going to really to be the winners…but I’m biassed. All mentioned will be accurate, articulate and will go very low…but when you are checking subs really focus on which ones truly dissolve away and just leave you with that low end sonic re-enforcement that you’ve been waiting for. That’s where the fathoms really shine imo. I don’t even realize it’s there until I turn it off…and if I turn it off I want it back on immediately. It’s like a magic box that instantly makes my current speakers TRULY full range. I can’t stop singing it’s praises and I have the older F112V1 - the F112v2 has an even better ‘room optimization’ function. Anyways, I would love to hear what you choose when you finish your journey…but I don’t think you can really go wrong with any of those choices. It’s a personal choice in the end. Good luck!

Now all I have to do is work out some audio tracks and a movie track to do the comparisons …

Organ tracks “Bydlo” (track 7) and “Promenade” (track 8) from the Dorian CD Pictures at an exhibition.
“The Dream Theme” (track 7) from the soundtrack to the movie Captive, by U2’s guitarist The Edge.
And, of course, Paul’s suggestions from his recent daily post regarding new woofers for the IRSV.

If the purchase of these subs is for music first then instead of just “bass spectacular” tracks then you need to include tracks that make use of the acoustic bass like the SuperBass album featuring Ray Brown, Christian McBride and John Clayton.

I have not heard the new SVS Ultra subs but I had a pair of Ultra 13’s and sold them for a JL Audio F113v2 pair. The SVS are great for the money, but JL’s are more controlled and more musical all day long.

I like how you included room size to match the subwoofer requirements. Often I think more is better, but at what point does the size of the subwoofer become a detriment to performance due to room size?
I have read all the responses, and I’m gonna hi-jack this thread a bit and ask you Galen and others who care to respond for my application “needs”. I am currently almost done re-doing my office in my home for a “budget-ish” system. Currently have the KEF LS50 limited black speakers and Denon PMA 1600NE integrated amplifier. My PC is the source.
The office dimensions are 11’ x 9’ x 8’. I am considering putting in either one KEF Kube 10b, or 2 Kube 8b’s, or one REL T7i’s, or 2 REL T zero’s.

Thanks

My $0.02:

Buy the two best subwoofers you can afford to optimize your stereo sound. There is no such thing as overkill (within reason) so long as you properly integrate the subwoofers and don’t over drive them to the detriment of the music.

I have a very old SVS ( PB12-ULTRA/2 - a great subwoofer, still) in my big rig doing stereo/HT double duty and an REL T5i in my office stereo system. I will be adding a second T5i, when budget allows.

Given the size of your room, I would get two REL’s (T7i’s or T5i’s) and set them up near your L&R speakers where they sound the best using the REL-recommended Neutrik Speakon connection approach.

Have fun.

Thanks Scotte, for chiming in. With your current T5i, do you feel it is enough to pressurize the low end enough? What size is your office? I get that 2 will give better room mode balance. I previously had a Onkyo HT receiever with Klipsch RP-61 setup with dual 12 inch Klipsch subs(way too much beef for the room size including space requirements, but fun sometimes).

Hi I have a pair of these, they blew away RELs line up and are made to your desired finish, they are really good I use them with a pair of Burmester B100s image

I like the way they look!

MSRP = ?

Start about £1800 each, they are a UK company and will discuss with you over phone for buying two I got a good discount. There are 2 similar design models higher up the food chain also. They have dsp operated via an app that works really well allowing you to tune them in from your listening position and set several presets for different preferences. The company is MJ Acoustics

I estimate that my office is just a hair larger – closer to 15’ in depth but maybe a foot or two narrower. The T5i has plenty to offer and it can be overbearing if placement or level is off. I keep in out of the corner and a bit away from the wall to keep it from sounding boomy or “localized”. (By the way it compliments a 15wpc tube integrated driving Anthony Gallo Acoustic Strada speakers on AGA stands and is hooked up to the integrated’s speaker terminals via the Neutrik Speaker cable.) It is a great performing subwoofer. Note that its driver is down-firing – if that might matter to you.

I think two T5i’s would have more than enough potential for the size of your room if that is what you are asking.

Cheers.
