Sunlight: Installation and Technical Issues

Confirmed, and loud enough for me to be a bit concerned about my b&w 800 diamond tweeters.

Hi there,

Mutedly excited about Sunlight because since Redcloud, I have not been able to update my fw.

Tried downgrade to Take but that doesn’t work either.

Dsjr, attempting via multiple different USB sticks.

Do I need to change the bootloader etc?

Following the directions by unzipping and copying onto the root of the zip. USB is formatted using a Mac to Ms dos format.

Is there any “force” method to copy the fw over?

Thats a real shame.

If you have not done so already, I suggest you get directly in touch with PS Audio service.

I would start here:

1-800-PSAUDIO in the United States or Canada. If you are calling from outside the US, +1-720-406-8946

[@jamesh FYI ^^]

I’ve had the same problem, reloaded Sunlight multiple times, let it play burn-in files for several days, could not get rid of fatiguing high frequency edge. I could not understand all the excitement since Windom sounded much better.

Last night, before giving up and going back to Windom for good, I tried reverting to an older version, chose Torreys, played some songs then loaded Sunlight again, that seemed to do the trick, no more high frequency edge. Now I hear all the stuff everyone is talking about. Not sure if this was just a fluke but worth a try if you are still having issues.

Hi Ted,
I already had a dsf128 file burnt on a DVD. When I play it on my DMP, the DS shows me still 24/176 as before. Any idea? Thanks!

to folks using Roon - you might have to go to Audio Device Settings - Advanced Settings and set the maximum rate for your endpoint to 768kHz and DSD256 (i had it on 384kHz before).

Thanks, I’ll try that tonight.

I just emailed over some files. Let’s hope this does the trick.

I’m not certain, but I don’t believe the DMP could handle double rate DSD. I could be wrong though…

@jmauger

At last, heard the Denafrips Terminator Plus. A friend brought his to my home because my system is more revealing than his. He wanted me to listen and convince me of its superiority. We listened to both,

Thanks for Posting this review does your DS have the Edcor Transformers installed?

Because Elk moved my original post from “sound impressions” into this thread, the former dialogue is obviously lost. My question to Ted was:

“Sorry, if I ask a (as I think) already zillion times asked question: Which DSD formats I can use now via I2S since “Sunlight”?”

His answer: “DSD64, DSD128 and DSD256. Either native DSD or DoP.”

I thought, that this one of the further benefits of “Sunlight”: Not only via USB, but also I2S… Maybe somebody knows the unmasked truth :upside_down_face:?

Sunlight doesn’t really change anything in this setup. The DAC has always been able to accept 2XDSD over I2S. The bottle neck here is the DMP.

Ok…the misinterpretation was therefore on my side. Thanks :disappointed_relieved:

I installed Sunlight, without a hitch. Started listening to music on Monday night. I did not noticed an increased in volume, like somebody mention earlier. By Thursday, noticed that the sound had a bigger soundstage, it was cleaner and tracks that I know by memory that I played like: Melody Gardot(Over the Rainbow),Anette Askvik (Liberty),Stevie Ray Vaughn (Tin Pan Alley), Brian Bromberg (The Saga of Harrison Crabfeathers), amongst other tunes, sounded fantastic, awesome!! My Direcstream had a new life and a new breath of air,
With all good there is something not good to report. That could be a single incident that maybe affects me. My system is set with ROON managing my music and goes to an RS8 ROC (4 Tara bytes storage), feeding via USB to a Matrix, from the Matrix, it goes via I2S to the Directstream. I did not had any DSD 256 tunes, to verify the Directstream showed on the screen the actual 256. Whats happening I think is when I play tracks of DSD 256, on the screen it shows DSD 128.
I do not know if ROON is downgrading it from 256 to 128.
Anybody has a clue in what to try???
Much appreciated.

Click on the “signal path” dot icon to the left of the play controls and see what Roon says about your signal path. Post a screen shot of it here. It will look something like this:

I play DSD 256 files from Roon thru my Matrix Spdif 2 into the DSD Sr. No issues no downsampling.

That shows you are playing the DSD256 track…but not how it is being sent to the DAC. I am not saying it is not playing it as a DSD256 track to thebDAC…but Roon be doing many different things. You need to show the signal path to know for sure.

That’s the best I can do.

Great. That doesn’t help @pelito. My point was that just showing that a DSD256 was playing does not mean it was playing at DSD256 to the DAC…

I’ve just ordered from PS Audio and SD card with Sunlight. When it arrives I want to make sure I’m installing the firmware correctly. Is this the process?

  1. Power down DSD Sr.
  2. Insert SD card.
  3. Power up DSD. Watch as it performs installation.
  4. Power down DSD.
  5. Remove SD card.
  6. Power up DSD and start listening to music.
