Sunlight: Installation and Technical Issues

On the DSJr. Either on the remote control or on the unit with the button that is on the left of the display. Just press it without holding it in and it will switch inputs.

For me the click is louder with this firmware version, and I get it anytime I go from PCM to DSD (or SACD via the i2s input). Would appear to be a result of something switching within the electronics.

This was posted earlier by Ted in the ‘Sunlight: Sound Impressions’ topic.

“One of the things I did to get better sound disabled the ramp up after an automatic mute when sample rates change, DSD/PCM changes, preemphasis changes, etc. So instead of ramping up over 10 or so milliseconds it’s silent for that time and then the new material starts. In my (apparently too limited) testing I didn’t notice significantly worse clicks and pops.”

I have the Junior with Sunlight since ‘day 1’. The last couple of days I have noted a funny thing, the DSD switches itself on! I put it in stand-by mode with remote or by pressing blue button, but after 10-15 minutes it switches on again! Totally weird. I just tested it again, and it took 12 minutes until it went to ON again.

Anyone else with the Junior having this spooky experience?

No other remotes or IR signals as far as I know are involved.

I noted that PSAudio released a 2nd Sunlight with some quick-fixes. Do we know what these patches were supposed to correct?

Did a new test right now, it just took 3 minutes for the DSD to magically switch itself on again

If you don’t need the display then you can dim it to off. Apart from shorting out the output to ground this is all the blue button does anyway if I recall Ted correctly

The display is off, but I don’t like the idea of my gear to have an opinion of their own. Annoying and obviously something new with Sunlight.

Ted has previously said that if you use the I2S input then the device connected to it may be effectively powering the dac and stoping it from shutting down. This is the only occurance of this I have heard of before.

I wouldn’t mind having a sixtel of the First Pilsner. Yummy!

Unplugged the I2S from my Oppo, but the Jr is still switching itself on after a few minutes.

I will try the latest path, the one from 4th of July instead.

This also happens If you’re using the Bridge. If you disconnect it, it shouldn’t happen. Seems to happen with Roon more. Roon will randomly send the DAC a command which will wake it up.

Yes, makes sense and I know about that. I re-loaded Sunlight and now it seems to be gone, no big deal. And yes, I use Roon…

At last, heard the Denafrips Terminator Plus. A friend brought his to my home because my system is more revealing than his. He wanted me to listen and convince me of its superiority. We listened to both, the Denafrips and the PS Audio DSD with Sunlight. Yes, the Denafrips is great. Great clarity, great definition, great air, great bass. But the DSD trounced it in all these aspects and more. More organic. Music really flows. Voices sound more natural. Soundstage was superior. The sound of string instruments is more natural: you can tell it is a wood instrument with strings and the body of the instrument resonates. My friend is going to sell the Denafrips and buying the DSD after this test.

Have PS Audio commented on this issue yet?

Hi, can you explain what you mean by ‘both use I2S’? I have an Oppo 205 but there is no I2S output and, as far as I know, there is no I2S mod for the 205.

Are you having a similar problem? Over all inputs?

I should explain more clearly. The Oppo 205 HDMI output goes to a Chinese made I2S board first, then connects to DS by another HDMI cables. I used two AQ Coffee HDMI cables. So it is not a direct connection.

8 posts were split to a new topic: How to play purchased NativeDSD files (DSD256 or DSD512) with DS DAC?

Thank you!

Same here, Sunlight has louder click than Windom switching DSD and PCM with I2s input.

When using Roon, pressing play, pause, back and forward always briefly turns on the display.
