I just hooked up this Sonore/Uptone Audio streaming option, with my Nucleus+ feeding the ultraRendu to ultraDigital bridge to i2S input of DS DAC.
The DAC has about 700 hours on it now, and is really starting to sound good after what seems to be the tail end of break-in. I have read many good things here about this combo, and am very excited to hear how the Sonore stuff sounds compared to the Bridge II.
Given that you have the Nuceleus+ why are you using the ultraRendu? Couldn’t you go directly from the Nuceleus+ to the ultraDigital to i2S? Does the ultraRendu provide something extra?
Gotcha. I was under the impression the recommendation was before the Nucleus was an option. Hey whatever sounds better to you is the way to go. I have been thinking of trying a Nucleus in place of my Mac Mini.
I have a suspicion that the Roon recommendations about the Server and any bridge were historical. I run Roon Rock into a Matrix as do some other forum members here and it sounds exceptional. Now my Rock has 32 Gb of RAM and a quad core i7 CPU in a fanless case and powered by an HDPlex LPS. Don’t discount it until you’ve tried it. It makes for a simpler implementation.
Nope…they still actually have not changed their recommendation, but I hear you. Many factors in different setups makes it impossible to objectively assert one config over another. I really don’t see much more complexity in my setup, just trying different methods, so “simpler implementation” is really moot, at least to me.
That’s usually a good recommendation. It’s good to have those different opinions here.
The reason why (without the chance to personally try in detail) I trust Fremer more than others is, that compared to normal user reports, reviewers in general have the advantage of usually…
having less need to justify their personal choices
having more experience/comparison background
…and Fremer in person compared to other reviewers imo…
knows more or less the whole phono equipment and concept history and people of the last decades
is noticeably more open than others to question his own choices and clearly tells when other stuff is better or makes more sense
doesn’t seem to need to do any manufacturer a favor with a review and clearly names weaker performance
looks behind the marketing brochures and questions things
clearly corrects himself in case of later, better knowledge
Regarding the linear trackers, which I long time guessed as the ideal solution, I was so far reluctant due to the number and variety of (besides the positive) also negative evaluations.
So far I got, that the only disadvantage the advocates and opposers of linear trackers agree on is, that they are fiddly in initial setup and a bit less hazard-free in daily operation.
The other basic disadvantages which the opposers name for more or less all the concepts …like not holding their configuration, not holding the assumption of tracking really linear in practice, horizontal/vertical mass imbalance and its impacts, stressing the cantilever etc…are all more or less refused by the individual advocates, calling their own concepts quite free from it.
That’s just the usual argumentation among differing opinions as we know them.
I really always wanted to favor tangential arms…just to try out/buy/afford a 10k arm, it was so far too much for me from various sources speaking against it compared to my initial guess that it is undoubtedly the ideal concept.
Anyhow good to hear there are positive examples like yours.
Finally we can all make up our opinion how important the less tracking error is, as we can compare the sound difference between a track within the null point area compared to one towards the end (or better the beginning or mid) of the record. Most might see it less relevant than they thought.
Moving to a new, larger house last Summer netted me a dedicated listening room! Mostly awesome with one drawback, size. The room is 10’x11’ which makes it a bit of a challenge. Not satisfied with that level of difficulty, I decided to add some Magnepan LRS to the mix . They sound wonderful though too bright in this room. I love the soundstage despite the brightness. Enter some room treatment. I emailed the folks at GIK Accoustics and used their 3D modeling software to kit out the room with some panels and traps which should all be coming by the end of the month. For now, enjoying the new room and new speakers as much as I can.
I love the room. All the details including your SpinClean. It looks like what I hope my room will be soon enough. Although my NPC is black. Lol
I do hope you post more about the LRS. I would really love to try a set. The dealer that carries Maggie’s is in Cincinnati and that’s beyond my current travel radius for now. Soon enough. Patience.
Thanks! I’m liking it too though it’s a work in progress.
The LRS, and dipole’s in general, are new to me and they are settling in. They are a little too bright to me and I’m coming from having B&W speakers previously. I’m hoping some room treatment will help tame them. The soundstage is great to me and is what I really look for in speakers. I’m not as interested in the bottom end though it’s a nice-to-have. I haven’t noticed bass lacking, in fact, somewhat the opposite to me. I have a small REL sub (REL T/Zero) tucked into the corner and I’m going to experiment with some other placement for it and I’m not sure how much it’s helping. I turn it off sometimes and notice its absence with some tracks but not with others. Do absolutely go audition some when you’re feeling better. Maybe you’ll like them, maybe not but it’s worth a listen.
I haven’t experienced any issues with my S300 driving these. There are a ton of warnings out there about making sure to match your amp to these speakers carefully. The folks at Magnepan asked about my amp when I ordered and gave the S300 their blessing
I’ve made some room measurements with REW but I’m such a n00b that I’m still not sure what to do with them. I have played some with EQ using Roon but, again, I’m pretty n00b-ish with that as well. They are easy to move about so I move them here and there to get different sounding results. All good fun!
And another thing… kick ass and get to feeling better!
Had a hard time justifying a $300 wall-mount for the Thorens, so I found some black iron shelf brackets on Etsy for $50. Mounted em to some baltic birch on the wall, and now I can clomp through the den with my big boots on. Result!
