The final release of Massive for MK2 DAC

I’m bit puzzled regarding the Massive beta to final SQ change - feedbacks I’m reading are not much aligned with my experience at least not on that level  .

Initially after I loaded final (had beta before), the SQ was affected by the grounding&wifi settings reset - I discovered and fixed that after only about first 24hours running final. That got me at level I was familiar from beta, maybe just a little bit cleaner and bit more energy at treble say over 12-15kHz (oh and some cymbals now sound more coherent/realistic). Soundstage got little bit wider too, not much deeper, neither I can hear “more”.

However the intensity of these changes were maybe only 1/10th of what I perceived when upgraded original firmware from factory (spring 2023) to Massive beta. Massive beta bough me what i’m reading from all the positive comments.

With final, I had UI lag after firmware upgrade and therefore tried to revert to beta and then back to final - again only small perceivable changes in sound between the 2 firmwares. (that time I still had “wrong” grounding settings) .

Knowing background (thanks Ted!) about the SDM7 , additional FPGA buffer and reading here all the positive comments, i’m thinking maybe I don’t have firmware correctly loaded?
Before I start reformatting 8GB thumb drive a trying to switch between firmwares again, is there a good way to tell if all is fine from firmware perspective?
Eventually is there is a way to force reload of each individual firmware (e.g. all of them) in DS MK2?

current readings from display:
FPGA: 233-Massive
USB: 3.02.a91f
Firmware: 3.1.0

Amazingly only refoamed once in the 90s. Probably living on borrowed time until they will need it done again.

I had The UI lag but the change to ground lift brought big change.when I reset to my preferences change dialed back some. Next big change involved pulling back some RFI and EMI absorber on Roon end point. Found this version of massive to deal better with noisier input. Next greatest change came after 125 hours of FPGA Firmware burn in.

I think that 10” woofer was the same as in the early Advent speaker. A good one but (like Elk said) won’t last forever (like me).

I need to have my woofers done. Who did you use?

My dealer took care of it. Alas, they are long gone now. A few years back I did some online research and found a Canadian company that specialized in Dahlquist refurbishing. They sold kits with the surround material and adhesive. Don’t know if they are still around but it must still be available somewhere.

Thanks

If anyone is interested, I have a firmware menu cheat sheet for Massive. It’s in PDF form, so I don’t know if there’s a way to post it here.

Is it different from this one?

It is. It has new choices for Massive, such as Transport Input and Display Mode. Of course the author of the original could probably update it, if so inclined.

Regnar has done allot of work on the DQ-10’s. My friend replaced the surrounds on his DQ-20’s. It was an easy project and turned out well. Be sure to get the kit with the shims and replacement dust caps to do it right. They are available on ebay.

Thank you, good to know. I’m sure I will be in need of their services eventually.

You can reload the Massive 233 by going through the System menu to update just select it and press update it will go through erasing the flash loading the software into the flash and than into the fpga. it will require a restart. When it comes back the volume will be set to 25 unless you had selected fixed during the process.

What is the purpose of the menu item “Transport Input”?

Ditto!

Does anyone know what IR 1&2 are for?
I get the off, but why 2?

This has been asked before. I was going to say scroll up but then thought it’ll be easier to copy/paste:

I hope someone from PS Audio sees this and responds. I went to the online manual for the Mk2 to try to find an answer to your question. The manual leaves a lot to be desired. To start with its pages are not numbered. The IR stands for infrared. I went to the section of the manual that the table of contents says IR is explained and I could not understand what the manual is saying. It appears to say that if another remote that you are using for a different brand of gear interferes with the Mk2, then you should turn of the IR in the Mk2. I assume that then the Mk2 does not respond to IR which means the supplied remote is useless!
