The Grimm MU2

I am sure it is fine equipment. The 1.5 bitDAc and preamp make it useful for many. The Grimm Engineer video he has no problem assigning the Roon and DAC math crunching to the i3 cites the quietness gained with no forced air cooling. I’d give Mu2 go if it had HT pass through and better Bacch processing friendliness. It would take more cables and the DiO or ADIO. But one never knows.

I may use my MU1 or Pink Faun as a Roon Server feeding the Bacch, and use the MU2 as a Processor DAC after the Bacch. The dio would work fine as it is the same as the adio input output wise. No DAC required if I use the MU2.

Thanks, I was in need of a distraction at the moment.

This guy isn’t as fun to listen to as Eelco.

Never met an engineer that was fun, but sometimes entertaining, especially when alcohol and karaoke are involved. Anyone who has spent time with an Asian manufacturer will know what I am taking about.

But in Japan, we must not talk about it the next morning.

Absolutely. No word. Especially to their wives.

…especially when [Sake] and karaoke are involved…

I fixed it for you.

Sake is for dinner. Whiskey is the after dinner drink, especially at a place that has their name on their bottle.

Susan and I were at a higher-end sushi bar in Ft Lauderdale many years ago. A group of local (American) businessmen were getting a group of Japanese businessmen hammered on sake and large plates. Good times, from the looks of it.

The locals were trying to talk business. The guests were wanting to sing songs. When the locals had a moment alone, I heard them talking about how they needed to sign the contract that night.

Shortly after, I caught the boss local in the men’s room and told him, “That ain’t gonna happen tonight, bubba. Pick up the tab, get them back to the hotel safely, don’t talk about it in the morning, and you’ll have your contract.”

I never heard anything more that night about signing (only singing), but I’m fairly certain they got the contract next day.

I’d like to think I made a difference, but I’ll never know for sure.

Cultural differences.

Just a piece of advice for all of you who might find yourself in the same situation with an Italian group: ask them to sign the contract even before uncorking the first bottle, you will never see them again the next morning!

I finally had blowfish sashimi and lived to tell the tale. But that was not the most challenging dish, the raw sea cucumber was hard to chew and was extremely fishy taste. They provided a strong sake to go with it and it wasn’t enough.

How about that Grimm MU2? Looks like a great device!

A number of us have had MU2 for a while, and I have had it in system for a couple of months. No question it does wonders to streaming. However, I felt it improves SACD playback equally! One thing I always thought that discs have advantage over streaming is on the bass. SACD playing on MU2 has produced the tightest and deepest bass through FR30 that I have ever heard in my system.

The internal SSD has been functioning for a few days, and has played for around 40 hours, The DSD256 files in it are sounding better day by day. I am hoping it will catch and surpass SACD on the bass eventually. So far it has become my favorite playbacks.

Have you had a chance to try the Redbook layer on the SACD thru the MU2 exclusively? As you know, I never made this comparison to the PST/Mk2, as I made the decision not to keep those units cause I had, unlike you, so few single layer SACD’s. Tell me what I’m missing, or not. No rush, not going back.

Since PST using I2S connection with MK2 will play DSD layer only (I think), I don’t know if there’s a way to play CD layer from I2S. But if I use different type of connectors/cables then there will be too many variables.

I have a couple albums from Japan with CDs and SACDs, and SACDs sounded better in PST/MK2/BHK pre in the past. I need to find those discs again.

May I suggest?

Try SACD via PST/MKII vs CD via PST/Grimm borrowing a decent AES/EBU cable. Then try the same SACD ripped on MU2’s SSD.

No hurry… take your time. But I think you have to do this comparison sooner or later, my friend.

What if you discover that…

Well, it has to wait because by the time internal SSD is settled, PZ will arrive for another break in. One of these days I will try if someone will lend me a quality AES cable😆
