The Grimm MU2

I have never encountered a problem with the IEC cord popping out on my MU2.

Grimm uses what appears to be a garden variety IEC inlet with an incorporated fuse tray, so I have to imagine that any problems others may be having would be more of a function of their particular layouts, e.g. MU2 placed to the extreme rear edge of the rack, coupled with perhaps a gargantuan power cord.

I successfully use a Synergistic Resaerch Galileo SX power cord on mine–definitely on the gargantuan side…

Interesting evaluation approach and reporting…

Thanks for posting.

Thanks to Al :folded_hands:

There is a major FW update available for MU2. You will like it. Tidal play and UPNP are available in addition to Roon now.

I quickly played a few songs and I love it, but I will let it run through the night to settle!

Interesting. I was unaware, but when I went through the menus via the web interface, I found:

Has anyone done the update process before, and if so, did it go smoothly?

I did it last night and it went smoothly. They also released updated manuals. It’s worthwhile taking a look at the software manual; especially the part about the Grimms now being certified Roon endpoints and the version of Grimm to enable and use in the Roon Audio settings.

The golf course is wet, but it beats staying home alone. Did not have time to listen to the system with the new FW on MU2 yet, but it has been running over night. Why? because I believe even FW update may affect the sound. Now it has Tidal Connect too, interesting.

The link:

Looks like many member got Al’s message already. He knows people and got on top of things.

Wait it was a Roon core I thought..so what do they mean its roon ready? is that for if you core is NOT internal?

My guess is for people already have Roon cores somewhere else, now they can buy MU2 and use it as an Roon endpoint. I tend to think the SQ will be better with the core in MU2 than somewhere else.

yeah that’s what I thought. Interesting that they have Tidal connect. Paul said nobody could do that any more. But I will say they have been working on this update according to the news flash for 18 months.

Did the upgrade last night, took less than an hour including reading the instructions. Once I understood how to do it the actual upgrade took about 10 minutes. Other than having to readdress some Roon and MU2 settings (more features = more settings) it went flawlessly.

Sound quality improvement is apparent, more relaxed while providing more clarity and fullness of sound stage. Way to go Grimm!!! A nice upgrade included in the purchase price.

@hardlyknow1 Do you (or anyone who has done the firmware update) have recommendations for the Roon and MU2 settings? Interested to hear what is good and why. Thanks!

That was what I experienced last night after the update, the sound improved. But it was late night so it did not count. MU2 has been running since the update so I will report this afternoon (assuming I am not exhausted after golfing in rain  ).

My settings are mostly default since I do not use any room correction or equalization that Roon offers. Just made sure everything still worked like I was use to, Roon extension to the MU2 was perhaps the biggest issue I had to deal with.

I did the upgrade but have been trying to get back to Roon recognizing the Mu2..Ive had several email exchanges with Justin at Grimm but so far Roon can’t see the MU@ as the server even though website connection to the MU2 says the server is running. Justin suggested i turn of the mu2 server and then start again but that still didin’t allow Roon to recognize the MU2.

Any further hints would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Although this might sound goofy, I am serious. Unplug the MU2, then plug it back in.

This was a tricky one. Go to Roon setting, and then select Audio. You need to deactivate MU2 ALSA and enable the new MU2:

Unfortunately MU2 does not show up at all (either as server or end point) under Audio.

Do you use BACCH? Then there is a different menu, I believe. You may need to contact their support. It is strange that none of the MU2 show up in your setup.

I’m confused. Is TIDAL officially sunsetting Connect?

This major FW update for MU2 is a triumph not only with functionality, but also with sound quality.

When I first heard it last night after the update, the clarity and resolution improvement was obvious. However, the treble was a bit edgy, and the flow of music was a bit sluggish (but I was tired from all the heavy eating at my sister’s home, plus I had to get up early, so maybe I was sluggish).

This afternoon the system simply sounds better than before. The treble edginess was gone, and the music flow is as smooth as I ever heard. The most noticeable improvement is on clarity; every note has better solidity and definition. But there is more, there is an added richness to an already outstanding musical presentation that I have always enjoyed (Strong point of MU2), but it just has more now!

Grimm worked 18 months on this update as Brian pointed out. They obviously did a lot with sound quality too. Al told me about the update last night and said: “it seems nice”, and I could not agree more.
