TSS Two Chassis Super DAC

I’d like it to be available now as well. Trying to make it less sensitive to parts shortages than the Mk II is hard. I’m not done hardening the schematics just yet. But I am converting to the parts we used in the Mk II when appropriate, at least we know we have those

I know what you mean. The whole parts thing is getting old.

What Happened?

I think the lack of global supply chain parts has shelved the project for a while.

Happy Cake Day @fritsveer-2! You are eleven! Wow!

It’s my understanding that Ted is still actively working on the TSS. I’m guessing with the final push to get the MKII out the door and a flurry of troubleshooting the MKII slowed his progress a bit. But if you take into account that he’s thinking he’ll be creating MKII updates on a yearly basis, I’m going out on a limb and guess that will give him more opportunity to really focus on the TSS.

I’ll admit I’ve been away from the forum for a bit so pardon me if I missed an update. I tried a search but didn’t find anything.

Is the TSS two chassis DAC still a real thing?

I understand speakers seems to be the primary focus right now but I have to admit I’ve been anxiously awaiting release since the development of a super DAC came up a few years ago.

I’ve actually been holding off on a digital upgrade in hopes Ted’s DAC will be released. Is it still a possibility?

Thanks

At first PSA said the TSS will come out soon after MK2 debut. But it has been a while for any news on it. Ted seems to abandon this forum lately too. :worried:

One explanation is Ted is finishing up on the TSS.

Never mind the TSS, I’m  they finish up the MK2.

I’m not sure what the status of the TSS is, but it seems a lot of the technology developed for the TSS ended up in the MkII. I would think the MKII with the APS transformer upgrade would be pretty close to what was planned. Hopefully if they ever do release it, it will get developed even further from its current incarnation.

@Paul @tedsmith

Any thoughts or updates?

Thanks in advance.

The TSS design that Ted has previously discussed mirrors the design principles of the MkII in most respects but takes the implementation to extremes. The clearest example of that is in having not just separate analog and digital boards, but completely separate boxes with independent power supplies and only connecting them with non-conductive optical cables.

I wouldn’t be willing to plan so much space for a DAC. I’d hope they can get in into a chassis a third as high.

A smaller DAC footprint would certainly be nice but the realities say otherwise. There is a growing trend (that’s a pun I guess) for high end manufacturers of streamers, DACs, and preamps to get larger rather than smaller. The single most important issue seems to be the size and location of the power supply. Big transformers that need to be isolated often require a two box approach.

Yes, but I’m not sure if even the PSU transformers are that high, but no way the output ones I’d say. Not sure why the chassis needs that height.

I already upgraded my rack early this year in preparation for a TSS, and a P20. With the Mountain Top FW, I felt like I had already upgraded to TSS for free! :man_dancing:

I am not sure about P20, my idea of future upgrade must pass bench press test.

You have to plan for more room! I planned for this stack in my cabinet.

Wait! Aren’t you doing downsizing at one time? Now are you growing again?
