I am also very interested in your take on the M1200s, as I also have a pair of 3.7i’s that seem to benefit from as much power as can be thrown at them. I’ve thought about adding DWM panels into the mix as well, so even more reason to hear your reaction.
Any observations you care to make comparing the M700/M1200s to previous power amps you’ve used with the 3.7i’s would also be very interesting, and might help provide further context.
First let me say that I think you would be quite happy adding the DWM bass panels to your 3.7is. I bought all my magnepans from the Listening room in Chestertown Maryland. He has 20.7s on the floor so I’ve heard them back to back with 3.7is. The big difference is bass performance and the DWMs get the 3.7is really close to the sound of 20.7s.
As far as comparing the M700s to the Adcom 555? I’d had some upgrades made to the input stage of the 555 and it was a surprisingly good sounding amp for the money. It was also close to 25 years old. The M700s just sound better all around. Better, tighter bass, smoother highs, more detail, better imaging, the whole package. If I’d never heard the M700s I could have lived happily with the Adcom for a good number of years to come but within 2 days of adding them to my system, I knew I was keeping them. I will let you know what I think of the M1200s after an appropriate amount of burn in time.
Well, I’m a little disappointed but we’ll leave it there. FedEx dropped the amps off around 2:30. I’m working from home so I started early so I could knock off as soon as the amps arrived. I unboxed number 1 and a could hear hardware rattling around inside the case as I turned it to get the plastic bag off. @#$%! This can’t be good. Was it glass? Did the tube somehow break? Since tube replacement is an approved user service I figured I’d check that first. No, the tube is good. Placed a call to PSA. My call was returned in about 15 minutes. No, please don’t power it up. Please send it back. We’ll send a pre-paid shipping label and send you a new amp. So there we are. While I’m disappointed I’m not angry. Mistakes happen and PSA is working very hard to correct it in a timely manner. Rather than be angry, which would get me nowhere, I want to thank Kevin (sales) for the quick follow up to correct the problem. I know at some point this will all be n the rear view and it will be part of the story that goes with the amps.
By the way, what’s in that thing? It weighs a lot more than and M700!
Thanks. I appreciate your sharing your experience with DWM panels, and will await your reaction to the M1200s – but apparently not for an unexpected extra few days (sorry to hear the one unit didn’t arrive in one piece).
Hey Paul…
why not send davidnapo a new unit to replace the damaged one…while the damaged one is
enroute to you…When I received my Emotiva XSP1 Gen2 pre it had a loose screw…Emotiva sent me
a new XSP1 while the damaged one was enroute back to Emotiva…why not the same for davidnapo?
OMG! I am really impressed! As posted above, one of my M1200s came in with something rattling around. Kevin said he’d take care of it and I had no doubt he would. I receive a shipping confirmation today at 5:35. It says I’ll have my replacement amp by 8:00 PM Thursday! I’m nearly 2000 miles from the factory. Kevin, Paul, all the staff at PSA, thank you for working so hard to correct what I’m sure was a minor issue. I just didn’t want to be the one to find out which traces on a PC board landed on when I powered the amp up. I’m impressed, really impressed.
Paul,
Please don’t take my postings as complaints. I understand you’re doing everything you can for me. I’m disappointed, sure. Who wouldn’t be. I want to hear these amps. But I am not angry. If it came out that way, it was not what I intended. You and your staff’s efforts are making me happy.
David
I also suspect that some of this type of damage is caused during shipping. I have seen how they load luggage into airplanes. I have seen boxes from Fedex and UPS slam flat onto the ground from halfway up the truck. No outward damage, and Electronics and especially PSs Audio gear is well packed, but there is always a limit to the G-forces it can survive.
A number of years ago I had to have my Mark Levinson No.28 pre-amp repaired. When I got it back, some of the functions didn’t work. They had me send it back again. When it arrived at the repair facility it was DOA. The tech eventually called me and said that it took him a long time to track it down but non-locking washers securing the power transistors had allowed the screws to work loose. This resulted in a voltage drop, low enough that it appeared as no power. Now I’m a mechanical guy and I have the electrical explanation wrong but vibration in shipping had caused something or things to work loose. There may have been some of the rough handling as well.
Fired that one off too quickly. Right after I hit send I heard someone yell, “FedEx”. It’s here but I have to finish my day of working from home. Can’t wait!
