Zipped versus never zipped files is NOT the problem…
Gotcha bro. What else to do? I’ve followed same approach since well forever which is exactly as described in the forum. Sigh…
In my system with Windom PCM has improved very much.
I almost only use 44.1 / 16 material and it sounds fantastic, just like vinyl.
I also think zip files are not the problem.
Maybe you can try the following:
Bigin with re-installing Snowmass (300 or 306, whatever you had before), then remove the SD card and reboot twice with the switch on the back.
Thereafter install Windom, remove the SD card and reboot twice.
For me this procedure worked, hope it does the same for you !
What OS are you using? Which DAC do you have?
If your issue is that you can’t load Windom at all, then it has been proven that unzipped files may help. If your issue is a “bad load”, then it has not been proven unzipped files will help with that, though you can try.
Ask @jamesh, he will email you the unzipped files…
Brand new Mac. DS Sr. As an oldie on the forums and one of the first owners of the DS I’ve been thru this same scenario bezilliond of times. Unzipped original files worked every time.
Try this:
https://forum.psaudio.com/t/my-ds-wont-update-to-redcloud-totally-stumped/5203/4?u=speed-racer
Then copy the files to the Fat16 formatted card. Make sure the files are at the root level and not in a folder.
Oh, make sure eject the card properly from the iMac each time as well.
I did not have any trouble at all but have in the past and it can be aggravating. Also try to upgrade with all of the input and output cables disconnected.
Indeed. I appreciate the advice. However yes I’ve been reformatting Kingston SD 2gb SD Card’s using the SD formatter program for many years. That’s always been my process.
Delete old files from card
Completely overwrite using SD formstter
FAT 16 always confirmed
Load new files
Eject properly
Then the update process
I’ve always had issues using zipped versions
Original unzipped always load properly W/O issue and she hums along in stride
How do you unzip the files. I have done a dozen updates using a card formatted as I described and files unzipped on my iMac downloaded from the PS Audio upgrade links.
Winzip 7
on a Mac ?
On my Mac the unzipping is done automatically when downloading.
After the download there is a zip file in the bin and the downloaded files in the PS folder are already unzipped.
Spent time this evening comparing Snowmass to Windom, applying advanced updating techniques thus feeling confident I’m getting as good a load as possible. I’m torn. Windom absolutely has a better soundstage. But I prefer the musicality and tone of Snowmass. Windom comes across more thin and dry compared to Snowmass. Ben Webster’s sax clearly has more gravitas in Snowmass. Windom more clearly defines separate instruments, which is interesting at first, but feels less musical to me over time. Wish I could combine the two, but alas…
A funny thing happened on the way to the Forum. After a week of playing, PCM has in fact now smoothed out and does sound very good too. I’m pleased about this development. It’s strange that it can take a week of playing to become it’s best, buy hey, I’ll take it.
Windom is really floating my boat (and I’m 100% PCM.) My system has never sounded this good. If I paid a thousand bucks for a cable and it wrought this level of improvement, I’d be happy with the purchase.
Last night cued up the new Wilco, and 42 minutes later I was just sitting there in awe as the last notes went down. Windom is giving me so much detail and clarity but it’s doing so with timbral richness and not with tipped up sizzle. I’ve always scoffed at the audiophile tendency to use the word “naturalness” (like, what could that specifically even mean?), but listening to Windom, that’s what comes to mind again and again. It’s natural. It’s right.
Then you have every reason to use unzipped original files yet again.
Let us know how things turn out once you have them and you get a chance to do the install.
For about 4 years I’m listening with Quad 2905 speakers, that sound familiair compaired to the 2912. My experience is that sibilance problems and “digital sounding” can be avoided by experimenting with the toe-in of the speakers. I use them with almost no toe-in (5-10 degrees max.).
I guess I am confused or baffled. I had ZERO issues loading up the files to a old photo SIM card and onto my DSD sr . It was easy 5 min and hell I did it accidentally at least once as the card was still in and it was powered down. This was my first time doing it too. From latest Snowmass . I have since removed the Windom card and use a brand new blank card for artwork !
Maybe I got lucky or a lucky player ! This I can tell you Windom is not coming back off !
