Thanks for the tip. I do need to experiment with placement and WIndom looks like being the thing to make me do it. Just hate moving Quads around as they are a little bit fragile IMO.
I agree completely with your findings.
@tedsmith to my understanding snowmass 3.06 was designed for Linux and since I am with ultrarendu, I am wondering if there is something that can be done with Windom as well in this regard.
So far, after a couple of back and forth I reinstalled 3.06 because the sound is more natural and less aggressive at higher frequencies (brass, strings from top-notch recent classical recordings).
Also, lower frequencies are more impactful, lifelike.
For reference running on sf mementos straight from einstein amp on Colin Wonfor cables loom.
After a fairly long time in with Windom, and some adjustment to my system… I decided to go back to Snowmass 3.06.
There are a lot of great things going on with Windom that I really do like, which most here have already discussed… but the achilles heel about Windom ‘for me’ at least is the annoying upper midrange/lower treble highlighted glare that is overly present on most of my favorite recordings,it just plain sounds unnatural. Maybe my ears are sensitive to Windom’s brighter frequency range in this area, but, with Snowmass this phenomenon is totally absent. If it wasn’t for this problem, I would happily stay with Windom. Oh well, can’t always have your cake…and eat it too…
Here’s hoping for a less irritable and more compatible next firmware release that might be more to my liking…Thanks Ted and PSA for the chance at the latest os peak.
Mark
I had that too. It turned out to be a less than 100% load.
You can try power off and on a few times more, maybe followed by some extra ‘burn in’.
If that doesn’t work go back to the version you had before Windom, make that work and then try loading Windom again.
Hi etbaby… I’ve already been there and done that! Im happy with 3.06…
Hi mark, i feel sorry for you, because Windom is so much better than Snowmass was.
But when 3.0.6 does it for you then that’s ok:smiley:
Hi Elk, i think you’re a moderator on this forum ?
If so, can you please tell me why my messages are labelled with ‘etbaby’ because i’m logged in as ‘Jovo3’.
Also my last messages don’t show the label of the person that i replied to, how come ?
But you have to unzip before use anyway, so what’s the difference - Ps Audio unzip the folder for you or you do it yourself. The only difference is the SD card.
Don’t feel sorry for me etbaby… My system is awesome as is!
ok mark-d, that makes me feel good
Putting things in perspective, I prefer Snowmass slightly to Windom.
But the difference is minuscule compared to the difference I heard this morning when I unplugged my BHK pre from my P20 and plugged it into the wall. I did this to demonstrate to a friend, the effectiveness of a regenerator.
He was gobsmacked by the improvement. But we both felt the software difference was slight. (He preferred Windom—but what’s he know? )
If you haven’t gotten the files yet - email me at tjt@psaudio.com, happy to help.
Sorry, I am completely baffled by this statement.
Absolutely. Will do.
Thx
If you started with a zip firmware, unzipped it, copied the unzipped files to the SD card, loaded the SD card in the DSD and the DAC booted properly, then there is no problem with the unzipped firmware files.
Ted said that a CRC check is performed on re-boot: in case of CRC check failure, the DAC will not re-boot.
So, if your DAC has been re-booting successfully every time after loading the SD card, then the problem is not with the unzipped files.
Look at this post from Ted: Was Upcoming DS release - Now Windom has been released
Just adding a little detail: if the version number is as expected after the update and a reboot, then the problem probably isn’t on the card or unzipped files. You probably want to try going back to an earlier release, say Huron or Yale and then back to Windom (and check the version number after each to verify that things “took”.)
That’s exactly how I go with listening tests…when it’s a obviously better -> go… and don’t look back
Once I installed an old firmware and was shocked how much things improved meanwhile
Ted, if no phase changes…do you have a clue what’s responsible for the bass/richness increase people perceive (unfortunately I couldn’t yet listen myself)?
Go to your room
Lowering the background noise and lowering jitter help across the spectrum. The lower background noise allows you to hear more details and makes things more real and engaging (there’s more to listen to, but it’s easier to hear.) Jitter affects all frequencies at the same time (technically it’s convolved with the audio signal.) That detracts from the specificity of the frequencies heard and muffles things somewhat.
The bigger effect is that you can listen a little louder to Windom without tiring your ears, and as we all know a louder volume sounds better, more immediate, more impact, easier to hear in the cracks, etc.
