Set out to buy new sneakers for my bike this year. Just when I thought the Pirelli Angel GT II could not be beat, their sister brand Metzler introduces the Roadtech 01 SE (Sport Edition).
My Ducati. It used to matter so much more. Now Bicycles are my thing.
And I totally agree on the Angel GT thang. I was doing Pilot 4 but Angel GT FTW.
I had a pair of angel GTs on my 2014 Honda Interceptor and really liked them. I will be putting new tires on my 2018 R1200RS soon and will likely install the Metzler Roadtech 01s. I read a review very recently between the angels, the Metzlers and four others. The Roadtechs were voted #1 by both reviewers. I can post my impressions at a later date.
Don’t make me miss my 2012 Multistrada again!
Please let us know what you think after you get the Metzlers spooned on. I like the Pirelli Angel GT II a good deal, but am happy to consider a replacement if there is a better choice.
Hey David! Read the same article and came to a similar conclusion. The reviewer used our bike, referenced the same OEM tires I have and of course rated the various tires.
I had both the original Metzler Roadtech 01s and Pirelli Angel GT IIs on my previous 2016 Ducati Multistrada. Both tires were far superior to the OEM Ducati tires. Better road feel, dry handling and wet handling. In fact the Angle GT IIs are so good in the wet they blew me away and the Metzlers were very good in the wet. What originally moved me towards the Pirellis is they have a 10% harder back tire center section which should mean hey last longer. My guess is that’s also why their stopping distance is 6’ longer than the Roadtech 01 SE on the same bike in the same test.
Pirelli owns Metzler. Both tires are made in the same Metzler factory in Germany and some say these tires share the same carcass. Ultimately the question is, best performance Roadtech 01 SE or longest mileage probably the Pirelli Angel GT II. Can’t go wrong either way!
My R1200RS came with Pilot Road 4s. I’m only so, so on them. I think a lot of it is still me getting used to the long wheel base on the RS but it’s not as sporty as my VFRs and Interceptors were. Of course, it’s a hell of a lot more comfortable so… Give that the test was done on an R1250RS, I’m looking for something to make the bike a little sportier and that Roadtechs fit that bill, I’m going to try them. I used older Metzlers on my Hondas and was always pleased.
Good call David! I look at your 1200 and my 1250 as essentially the same bikes.
I had Road 2s and Road 3s in the past. The Mezlers have much more road feel at all speeds. My wife got 10k out of her Metzler Roadtech 01s pre SE. But she weighs 125 lbs and her Ducati Hyperstrata weighed 450 lbs. Guessing you’ll get less mileage.
Please keep me posted on your experience. I plan on putting either Metzlers or Pirellis on both of our 1250s in mid April.
I’ve avoided all offers to test ride the 1250. I love my bike, it’s paid for free and clear. I’ve heard nothing but good about the variable valves but I’m betting as long as I never ride one I will never want to get rid of my 1200. I’m nearly at the wear markers on my front tire (Pilot Road 4) at 10,000. The back has plenty of life. I lost two tires in the first year to nails. Crazy considering I’ve been riding for 43 years, put hundreds of thousands of miles on my bikes and have never gotten a flat until I bought the RS. There’s a dealer about 30 miles from me. They’re a little higher than mail order but they are there when you want to walk in and ask a question. They need to eat to and it doesn’t hurt that their techs have never left even a tiny mark on my wheels when changing a tire. I’ll be going in to see them within the month, I’m sure.
Lost 3 Roadtech 01 back tires to nails & screws. Dumb luck!
I am sure the R 1200 RS is a great bike. The 1250 only has a few upgrades really. Similar to you, we own our1250s outright and plan to keep them until we can’t ride anymore.
I work with a small local BMW/Ducati/KTM/Moto Guzzy dealer here in RI. Their Metzler & Pirelli prices are lower than RevZilla!
I’m using the standard Metzler Roadtec 01s on my '15 BMW R1200RT and they handle great and last about as long as other brands I’ve tried including the Pilot 04 (7k to 8k). The 01 tread pattern tends to make a bit of noise after some wear, but overall very pleased.
Wow! People really do take those off road. Most of the ones I see around me, and there are a lot, are so clean they’ve probably never been out in the rain. That looks like fun.
It is a very small minority that realize the GS was built to be dumped and to take you places only available via dirt roads.
As rare as a Jeep going off-road.
Jumping a curb does not count.
Yeah, and I see a lot of pickup trucks who’s beds are shinier than the paint on my car.
So, this happened today.
Didn’t go real far or real fast, but I rode again.
God, it felt so good to twist the throttle after over a year out of the saddle.
Congrats, Mike.
Be safe.
PS
What kind of Hi-Fi are you rocking on the ride?
