Qobuz. 16/44.1. After playing the Corelli Opus V I decided to re-listen to this album by Geminiani, which is based on it. Very good, but Corelli is better!
I am not much of a one for madrigals, but after reading about Gesualdo’s ‘colourful’ life I decided to give these a try. They seem more dramatic than the norm.
Madrigals are often performed coldly with rigid tempos, etc. We forget they were entertainment and should be performed as such, with humor, sadness, drama.
Gesualdo was an avant-garde-ist of his time. His madrigals in their hyper-expressivity and highly unusual harmonic twists and turns were exceptional.
Stravinsky found a kindred spirit in Gesualdo’s music and in the 1950’s dedicated two of his compositions ( Monumentum pro Gesualdo and Tres sacrae cantiones (Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa)) to the late renaissance composer.
Wonderful information! Thanks
