Heard the American countertenor Reginald Mobley for the first time tonight, in an exceptional line-up.

A huge number of microphones needed to record/broadcast in this venue, opened in 1726. The recording engineer can be seen above the door.

Another one recorded in the church outside my office window, St Jude’s Hampstead, that I hate and everyone else seems to love.

The violinist in this recording was leading the orchestra last night - you can see her on the left, just to the right of the chap with the bald head. It’s a fine recording.

I like the concept of the lead violinist playing the solo part rather than hiring some rock-star soloist. Record company executives may think otherwise.

I’m always struck by the bewildering array of strategies Bruckner employs to confound the harmonic and melodic expectations of the listener, and nowhere more so than in this piece - -

Anton Bruckner : Symphony No. 8 in C minor

Arminio, an opera by Handel. Performed and staged mostly by people on 2-year career development contracts at Covent Garden, on a programme separate from the main company.

Performed in the second theatre, which is completely underground, and seats 400. The acoustics are superb, a 16-piece baroque band sounded as clear as a bell from the first balcony. Some very good singing as well.

There are only two recordings, only one in the original Italian.

The choir of Clare College are amazing (last heard them do the Matthew’s Passion, which was delayed by 2 years due to covid), and the college has an incredible list of alumni of singers, performers and composers.

This is another fine recording, done in All Hallow’s Gospel Oak (a very popular venue), with a cover from Kaupo Kikkas’ series Treescapes. His cover art and portraiture is everywhere these days.

Our picture from that series arrived last week, plus two of his books. This picture is based on Bach’s 48.

I must say I’m tempted to order that same print in the 80cmx60cm size from his Rotterdam gallery. Very nice indeed.

We met some years ago and I contacted and bought direct. Some of his album covers and music portraits are on his website.

I went to an exhibition by Ross Halfin with a view to buying something and I found him so rude and full of himself I walked away.

Years ago I had the chance to listen to Bruckner and Scelsi in a Concert in Darmstadt. Very contrastive. Something of a dichotomy in Harmony and Sound. But both was really enjoyable. Bruckner very concrete and straight forward in developping 4 sets of a Symhony. Scelsi with very bright colours and sensitive …

Aside from the musical merits and interest, this is a great system demo for percussion. Evelyn Glennie’s virtuosity with a wide variety of percussion instruments never ceases to impress me.
