A new arrival from the BBC Music Magazine.
Just got this through from a wonderful eBay seller in the US who was clearing out her collection, 1961 release in NM condition still in original shrink, she really took care of her records.
Václav Smetáček, The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Czech Singers Chorus, Carl Orff – Carmina Burana
There’s a great article in the Washington Post from 1979 where they compare versions up to that point and this one is mentioned.
Roger Sessions : Symphonies 6, 7 and 9
American Composers Orchestra - Dennis Russell Davies
Christoph Graupner : Cantatas
Miriam Feuersinger, soprano
Capricornus Consort Basel - Peter Barczi
Yay! for the Roger Sessions.
Very interesting. On my list for today.
I remember buying that great release in the early days of the CD format. That launched ECM’s New Series recordings, one of many from that label I’ve bought over the years.
Manfred Eicher’s ECM and Arvo Part were a great match that bore excellent fruit IME.
Alina being yet another example.
Another utterly charming recording from this ensemble following up their Wagenseil divertimenti recording from last year - -
Leopold Hofmann (1738 – 1793) : Divertimenti Op. 1
Musica Elegentia - Matteo Cicchitti
If you enjoy 17th C. choral music, this is something interesting a little off the beaten path. Transplant Spanish composers to the jungles of Bolivia and combine the two cultures.
OOPs! Wrong thread, but here it stays. A different form of Classical I suppose, what with the Star Spangled Banner. My apologies.
On the Carmina Burana tip, just got this off an incredible eBayer from the US, this is a 1961 copy of Václav Smetáček, The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Czech Singers Chorus, Carl Orff – Carmina Burana
It came in original shrink, it’s NM throughout, I’ve never seen such an old record in this kind of shape, even the cover is still true NM, it’s absolutely incredible. Sound is gorgeous!
Bought Boulez’s Columbia box set several years ago and still regularly enjoy many of these discs. I think Sony did an excellent job of mastering these cd’s, they sound wonderful for the most part.
