CD on harmonia mundi
one of my favorite releases from 2021…
Viewing this from Harley Lovegrove of Pearl Acoustics make me want t further explore the work of Jacqueline Du Pre. Thanks for sharing.
I have a 24 bit 96kHz flac copy of the Du Pres/Barbirolli recording. I obtained it from HDTracks (USA), as it was not made available on the UK HDTracks web site. I found this annoying as I think the hi-res transfer was done at EMI in the UK, where I started my working life in 1960. It is labelled as an EMI recording, not Warner. The version currently available on the USA HDTracks site is 44.1kHz · 24bit. The UK HDTracks site has closed down.
My initial preference is for vinyl, and at the moment I have no means for playing back a 24 bit 96kHz download as my DAC is out of commission.
Listening to the mighty 40th in g-minor!
This is the second studio recording Walter did for Columbia. The first (mono) was with the New York Philharmonic in ’53 and many prefer that version. The second (stereo, see below) was from January ’59 with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra.
For those wondering what the Columbia Symphony Orchestra was – Walter was living in Los Angeles and worked with the Los Angeles Philharmonic but liked to “hand pick” a few additional musicians for his recordings, therefore, they used the alias; “Columbia Symphony Orchestra.”
Just to confuse things, when Walter recorded in New York at the end of his career, he did the same thing with the New York Philharmonic and recordings use the same Columbia Symphony Orchestra alias. So you really don’t know who’s playing until you look at the recording venue. The below recording is from the American Legion Hall in LA.
Single Layer SACD from Sony Classical
Was this coincidence with my complaining on the vinyl thread the other day that Lisette Oropesa had yet to do a solo recital recording? And here it is, I don’t know how I missed it. Listened to it last night on Qobuz and really enjoyed it. Her voice is wonderfully lyrical and seemingly effortless. She is a fabulous actress as well. Hope she comes back to perform at Covent Garden soon - in some Mozart.
I have been told from a sound engineer friend, who just makes SACD’s this is NOT a proper SACD
I think you made that point before, didn’t you?
Not sure Craig, sorry if I had
No problem. As I recall, it was your prior note that prompted me to check what little info about the recording was included with the disc, and it confirmed the recording was made in PCM, so your friend is quite right.
I already have many interpretations of this but here’s a very energetic, good one which is very good sounding, too.
