I did not experience high roll off on my player. I only had the player 5 months before I sold it to buy a DirectStream.
Wish I could have understood what he was saying. I really hesitate to even comment on perceived differences heard through an online video, reproduced on my computer, but if I heard any difference at all (besides levels), it was what sounded like a little loss of clarity on the massed vocals when he switched from the Ruby to the Denon at about 10:44. And that was slight, and the only difference I could tell. I tried to be as blind about it as I could - I was looking at a different browser window while listening, then went back to locate where on the video it happened, and see which of the two I thought better.

Welcome @xin.chinada !
Craig, I went from a PSA DMP and DS DAC to an SA-10. The SA-10 has a neutral to warm sound. It sounds great overall! Never heard the SA-KI because I run my system balanced. Most reviews of the SA-10 suggested the balanced outputs sound notably better so I assume it has a big edge over the SA-KI.
For reference I’ve also had a dCS P8i & P8i MK2, Esoteric K-05, Wadia 861B & Naim CDX2. I’d put the SA-10 up against the lot of them including the PS Audio separates.
Thank you.
I had a similar experience going from a DMP + DSD to a SA-10. I am considering a PW SACD but am not sure if it’s an upgrade.
So may I assume that you and @Stax are using the SA-10’s internal DAC?
I’ve only used the internal dac so far but I plan to try digital out for redbook play to an external dac some time next week.
I’ve the USB input for 16/44.1 iTunes and the optical input for TV and Movies.
Based on my experience with CDs and SACDs, the SA-10’s DAC would be great with with other Hi Res sources.
If I still had my DS DAC, I would try the PST. With their 30 day trial, there is nothing to lose.
I am interested in the PST. My dac (Tambaqui) does have source I2S input but I don’t know if it’s compatible with PST I2S output or not.
@kzk - Can I ask a few questions about the CD-S1000:
-
When you put a disc in and close the tray, does the display read “1,” rather than the usual total number of tracks, followed by the total time of the disc?
-
Whether it has a disc in it or not, when the tray slides open, do you hear a slight mechanical, clunk-like noise? I get this and find it surprising, especially since I get absolutely no noise when closing the tray.
-
When skipping ahead to the next track, or back to an earlier one, do you get a slight static pop/click sound through the speakers when the track starts?
Have you considered ripping your SACD’s which would forego any need for a quality player?
I will try to look at this tonight and get back to you
Thanks
Yes it reads track 1 with up counting time of play for that track. A single press of “display” button on remote switches to time remaining countdown for track, and a second press of same button switches to time remaining countdown of whole disc without indicating total number of tracks.
No. If anything after the tray fully closes there is some noise that sounds like loading of some sort but I’m no cdp expert (last purchased one 20 yrs ago so…) so seems normal to me. Opening virtually silent, as is closing until fully closed and then the “loading” sound - not sure how to describe.
No
Thanks, kzk!
Just to be clear, if you insert a disc and don’t press any other buttons, does the display then read “CD TRACK 1,” with nothing else in the display? I find this strange, as every other player I have owned (maybe a dozen) reads the total time and total number of tracks upon insertion.
Yes, that is what it reads. What you said. Doesn’t bother me I guess. Like I said, I don’t listen to Cd much. My streamer dac sounds better to me.
I should have noted here that back in May I changed from my Marantz SA8005 to their SACD 30n. I’ve found it to be a substantial improvement. I’d still characterize the sound as somewhat warm, but not at the expense of losing fine detail. Overall the sound is more rounded and organic. Octave Records SACDs sound amazing on it. It’s provided one more slight movement in the direction of realism, at least to my ears. Glad I got it in May, too, since the price has now jumped from $2599 to $2999. I’m rarely on the good end of those kind of price changes.
