Your Next Upgrade? (Part 1)

+1 on the Audio Sensibility. They frequently have a 13% (for some odd reason) sale, and the cables are very nice. I use a Silver Statement as a phono cable to my XP17.

Agree on Audio Sensibility. Solid OCC copper and silver cables at sane prices. He also dabbles in custom DC cables.

Second sub was installed.

It’s life changing.

Unbelievable difference. Bigger than any change other than new speakers.

Hard to know where to go from here.

I think a second sub increases the sonic division of labor. It’s great. So much more clarity, openness, fullness, weight, and this is with the volume turned way down on the subs.

What always surprises me is how much stereo subs improve the mid range.

Should I add a second power amp to go mono?

It is hard to look back. If you’re stereo amp can bridge. It will add further depth and more 3D.

I have a single NADc298 that can bridge. Once those start hitting the used market I think they will be so reasonably priced I won’t be able to pass it up.

Space in rack becomes issue.

I’d have 600 watts of class d per channel in the speakers and 200 watts of a/b in the bass per channel.

All my bridging amps are A/B. Currently bridge my surround HT amp and my boat stereo amps. . Noise floor always seems to drop when bridged. Never can get too much wpc

I think this is the key advantage of going with mono amps - power on demand for transients and “ease” of presentation.

Of course you could overdrive your speakers, but having lots of Watts on hand (more than you need for average listening levels) is important for high performance in my experience.

FWIW, my class A/B mono amps are rated at 500 wpc into 8 Ohms and I use them to drive speakers rated as follows:

Impedance of 4 to 8 ohms
Overall sensitivity of 88 dB/1w/1m
Maximum power usage of 350 watt

These speakers really “enjoy” the extra power (and dynamics) available from the 500 wpc amplifiers.

Yes, I have Monoblocks for the power too. . . all 2.8 watts per channel!

What I think is the distinction with mine compared to the closest stereo version is. . . clarity. And expense. . . two cables, two sets of isolation footers. . . darn, but worth it.

(Mine have the power supply bypass mods and a voltage regulation tube under the chassis for the input tube that are not standard but also “worth it,” very much so).

Beat me to it as those are indeed splendid. Efficient speakers being the key.

Yes. Mine are not incredibly efficient (about 92 db) but have omnidirectional, ribbon tweeter, passive radiator speakers and a simple crossover. Work splendidly with those small watts.

Oooooh. So pretty!

tmr has 2 of them “open box”

Nice!

I love my c298. I wish NAD had a non digital pre amp to go with it, that had xlr input and output.

When TMR lists 1/8, does that mean they have 8 open box units?

I believe you are correct.

Wow

That’s a lot of class d power. That’s like 100000 watts!
